SALARY: $54,038.40 - $66,393.60 / annually Commensurate with experience. Step Salary System to be awarded annually on the anniversary date of hire and would typically start at Step 1. REPORTS TO: Works under the direct supervision of the General Foreman or Construction Foreman, following department rules, regulations and safety procedures and policies to complete assignments. Priorities are established by the supervisor. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Must perform semi-skilled manual work requiring skills of less than journeyman grade in the construction and repair of roads, streets, and sidewalks Does excavating, bracing, and grading Assists in the construction of cement and brick sidewalks Sets edge stones and repairs manholes Participates in snow and ice removal by preparing trucks and plows Plows and shovels snow May be required to make signs, order materials for signs, install and repair signs Lifts and carries manhole covers, catch basin covers and other heavy objects May work the evening shift and respond to emergency calls from the public, police, fire or other emergency personnel May answer and log in telephone calls for service Performs other related duties as assigned by the DPW Commissioner, Superintendent of Operations or their designee

Requirements

  • High school diploma required; technical training in the use of hand tools and construction equipment desired; two years of general construction experience; experience operating trucks and heavy equipment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of techniques of construction and the operation of maintenance equipment
  • Knowledge of safety practices and procedures
  • Ability to perform heavy construction work
  • Ability to solve construction related problems
  • Ability to operate heavy and other motor equipment, power, pneumatic and hand tools and specialized equipment
  • Construction skills
  • Skills in operation of equipment and tools
  • Valid Massachusetts Commercial Driver's License Class B with air brake endorsement.

Responsibilities
