About The Position

Performs skilled automotive/heavy equipment maintenance and repairs. The work involves light to heavy maintenance and repair of automotive and heavy equipment. The work requires training in the trade and experience. Work involves repairing a range of equipment. Work is performed under the technical supervision of the Highway Maintenance Division Chief.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of-- Methods, procedures, and techniques of the automotive repair trade.
  • Tools, materials, equipment, and safety precautions of the trade.
  • Ability to-- Perform light to heavy automotive repairs.
  • Deal effectively with the public.
  • Use of tools and equipment of the trade.
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent, including or supplemented by training in automotive and heavy equipment repair.
  • Five years of experience performing maintenance and repair, including three years of experience with maintenance of heavy-duty diesel engines.
  • Valid Class A commercial driver’s license with tanker endorsement and a current Medical Examiner’s Certificate in accordance with Federal Regulations.
  • Within six months of employment, must obtain the following: American Service Expectation (ASE) Certification to include T-Series. OSHA 10 Certification. Flagger certificate.
  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • Operation of a county-owned vehicle.
  • Subject to alcohol and drug testing.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains, repairs, and/or performs preventive maintenance on all Highway Maintenance-owned and maintained equipment, heavy motor equipment, and vehicles.
  • Performs diagnostics to determine problems and repairs.
  • Contacts vendors to order parts, supplies, and/or check prices of repair parts.
  • Operates service truck for road and field calls and to pick up parts and supplies.
  • Cleans shops; checks/maintains shop equipment to ensure proper working order.
  • Rotates assigned workstation to include open bay and service truck to repair a variety of equipment.
  • Dismounts and mounts heavy-duty equipment tires.
  • Maintains, operates, and repairs snow removal equipment in times of emergencies.
  • Assists with storm clean-up efforts, which may included operating heavy equipment, using power tools, and performing heavy lifting.
  • Operates, cleans, and maintains heavy equipment.
  • Maintains the stockpile yard, including stockpiling of material, cleanliness, and organization, to streamline yard operations.
  • Performs related work as required.
