About The Position

The position of counselor is to provide services to meet the needs of students; consult with teachers, staff and parents to enhance effectiveness in helping students; and to provide support to other school educational programs. The position of “counselor” performs under the supervision of a principal or other designated supervisor and has responsibility for the instruction and supervision of students. Supervision of students shall include guidance, development and safety. The counselor functions in accordance with District approved curriculum, policies, rules, regulations and the performance standards of the District/State and the performance goals established for the counselor. The counselor maintains a cooperative attitude with staff, parents and students. Parkrose expects counselors to be aware of and maintain “The competent educator standards” found in the Oregon Administrative Rules (OAR 584-020-0010) which is attached to this job description.

Requirements

  • A valid Oregon teaching certificate with appropriate endorsement from the Teacher Standards and Practices Commission (TSPC) is required upon hiring.
  • It is the employee’s responsibility to maintain their license and acquire the necessary credits to renew.

  • Select teaching strategies emphasizing student involvement
  • Assess student for the purpose of providing feedback to students, parents and administration regarding students’ progress, expectations, goals, etc.
  • Monitor student learning and pace instruction accordingly
  • Documentation of student progress – provide timely and accurate feedback and documentation to students, parents and appropriate staff members
  • Ability to develop and maintain an environment conducive to effective student learning
  • Regular attendance at work and activities must be maintained
  • Punctual in meeting deadlines, attending meetings and following schedules
  • Oregon Department of Education - Criminal Justice Fingerprint Clearance
  • First Aid/CPR/AED certification or the ability to obtain
  • Near/far visual acuity, depth perception. unaffected field of vision, unaffected hearing and the ability to evacuate students from classrooms/buildings

Responsibilities

  • Provides leadership and participates on the school’s Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (PBIS team.
  • Designs and implements strategic (yellow zone) behavior interventions.
  • Tracks and monitors student attendance and provides leadership to data teams tracking and analyzing attendance.
  • Designs, delivers, evaluates and revises a planned sequential, developmentally appropriate program to include lessons in social emotional learning, personal and academic goal-setting and career development.
  • Delivers curriculum in systematic manner to all students.
  • Facilitates instructional process in collaboration with school staff and community resources.
  • Provides behavioral and emotional support to students to promote academic growth.
  • Serves as a community liaison to connect families to school and family resources.
  • Communicates course goals and academic expectations to students
  • Provides for the health and safety of students in all instructional settings
  • Supervises students both in and out of the classroom.
  • Reports incidents (e.g. fights, suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining personal safety of students, providing a positive learning environment and adhering to Education Code, district and/or school policies.
  • Directs educational assistants, volunteers and/or student aides for the purpose of providing an effective school program and addressing the needs of individual students.
  • Performs other duties which may be assigned.
  • Participate in District-sponsored in-service offerings, PLC meetings, etc. appropriate to assignment
  • Assist other teachers for the purpose of implementing curriculum
  • Maintains confidential information relating to students, families and colleagues
