Des Moines Public Schools is seeking qualified applicants for the 26-27 school year to serve as a Cosmetology Teacher in an exciting new career education program at Central Campus. This position will start in August 2026. Please note: The posted salary is drawn from the 25-26 Salary Schedule as the 26-27 Salary Schedule is not yet final. TITLE: TCHR Central Campus Cosmetology Teacher POSITION TYPE: TCHR HIRING SPECIFICATIONS: Required Education and Experience: High school diploma or equivalent. Active Iowa Cosmetology License. Holds or is eligible to obtain a 5–12 Cosmetology CTE Authorization through the Iowa Board of Educational Examiners (BOEE). Industry professionals are encouraged to apply. A traditional teaching license is not required at time of hire if the candidate is willing to obtain the appropriate Iowa BOEE CTE authorization. Under Iowa BOEE guidelines, candidates may qualify for CTE authorization through: Valid Iowa cosmetology license Documented industry work experience Completion of required pedagogy coursework Background check and BOEE application process The district will support qualified candidates through the licensure process. Desired Education and Experience: Previous teaching, mentoring, or training experience. Experience supervising students or apprentices. Experience in salon ownership, management, or advanced specialty services. Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities: Strong knowledge of cosmetology industry standards and safety procedures. Ability to demonstrate and supervise hands-on skill development. Strong classroom management and communication skills. Ability to model professionalism and workplace expectations BASIC FUNCTION: Provide instruction in Cosmetology, delivering a broad overview of cosmetology careers and foundational hands-on skills in hair, nails, barbering, skincare, and related fields. Prepare students for continued study in cosmetology and related career pathways through hands-on learning and industry-aligned instruction. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Deliver engaging, standards-aligned instruction in foundational cosmetology skills. Provide hands-on learning experiences in hair styling, barbering techniques, manicuring, basic skincare, sanitation, and safety. Maintain a safe, sanitary classroom and lab environment in accordance with Iowa Board of Cosmetology Arts & Sciences standards. Teach professional skills including customer service, communication, and workplace expectations. Integrate career exploration and pathway awareness into instruction. Assess student learning using performance-based and written evaluations. Maintain equipment, tools, and supplies in a safe and organized manner. Collaborate with CTE staff to align curriculum to industry and postsecondary expectations. Maintain accurate student records and participate in data review processes. Engage with industry partners and advisory committees. ADDITIONAL ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (for every DMPS position): Attend work on a prompt and regular basis. Maintain confidentiality. Maintain satisfactory and harmonious working relationships with the public, students, and other employees. Assist with other duties as may be assigned.
