We are seeking a College Counselor to join our exceptional team. The College Counselor will collaborate closely with the Director of College Success and the College Success Team to implement a comprehensive program that fosters academic and leadership development for students in their respective grade levels. Role Summary Position Scope: The primary focus of the College Counselor at True North is to assist ALL students with post-secondary planning. The College Counselor follows an individualized approach as they prepare and assist each student in all aspects of post-secondary planning. There is no crisis counseling. Goal: The goal of the college success team is to ensure all True North scholars apply to six to eight colleges and receive acceptance and competitive financial aid packages at the best match possible. Purpose: College Counselors provide individualized planning to students and their parents. The College Counselor aims to advise students in identifying, applying to, and attending the ‘best fit’ post-secondary options, given the students' interests, goals, and financial circumstances.

  • Must have strong organizational and communication skills, verbal and written
  • Ability to work with the college team, parents, students, faculty, and support staff
  • Ability to plan, organize, and implement meetings involving a variety of topics and personnel
  • Candidates must see education as a vocation and are willing to go above and beyond the call of duty for the success of all students.

Responsibilities

  • Own caseload of students supporting their entire college application process from college research to matriculation
  • Educate upperclassmen on the application process through a variety of settings, which could include classroom presentations, after-school or evening workshops/presentations, small group meetings, or individual meetings.
  • Responsible for tracking progress, meeting yearly college success tasks, and the outcomes of students on assigned caseload
  • Identify potential scholarship opportunities for the students
  • Facilitate the financial aid process and assist seniors with completing necessary forms.
  • Support students in learning their strengths to build academic, personal, and leadership skills
  • Assist students with crafting, developing, revising, and submitting essays and personal statements.
  • Processing college application paperwork and writing letters of recommendation for summer programs, admissions, and scholarships.
  • Network with colleges, including travel to schools, hosting admissions reps, and attending regional and national conferences.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
