About The Position

The Hematopathology Technical Analyst is a clinical position that reports to the Clinical Program Director – Anatomic Pathology, and works closely with our Team of Hematopathologists and the Hematopathology Service, which diagnoses patients with leukemia, lymphoma and other hematopoietic disorders. The Hematopathology Technical Analyst plays a crucial role in supporting the operations of the Division of Hematopathology by serving as a key liaison between the division, clinicians, labs and outside hospitals/facilities. Under the direction of the Clinical Program Director – Anatomic Pathology and Hematopathology leadership, the Hematopathology Technical Analyst works closely with technical lab staff and clinicians, troubleshoots issues involving Hematopathology specimen processing, and coordinates various multidisciplinary tasks related to Hematopathology.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate the daily activities for the Hematopathology service. This includes implementing a system to effectively deliver hematopathology specimens to the Hematology and Pathology laboratories, supervising appropriate send-out tests for patient samples, gathering historical material for review, maintaining database for recurring patients, and assisting with requests for additional studies within CHOP laboratories.
  • Review molecular tests requested by the hematopathologists, and provide information on what ancillary reference labs have to offer. Triage preferred providers based on the type of test needed. Understand molecular aspects of tests to ensure that all of the targeted genes are covered by the outside institution. This requires keeping up to date with outside institutions and their testing menus.
  • Recommend laboratories for appropriate testing of Hematopathology specimens.
  • Assist the hematology/oncology clinical teams with medical test orders. Provide specific test information to these teams, including molecular/genetic aspects, turnaround times, and sample requirements. Choose the best sample based on the test needed and the methodology by which it is performed. Coordinate the collection and processing of samples from the clinical floor through central lab services.
  • Assist in the workup of new Hematopathology immunoperoxidase stains.
  • Create and support protocol documents as new lab processes and procedures are developed, especially in conjunction with new patient studies. Aid in any procedural changes as requests from clinicians and clinical trials are created, and work with the lab staff to provide instruction on new procedures.
  • Serve as the contact person to troubleshoot problems that arise on service such as incomplete and inappropriate orders on specimens and facilitating requisitions for non-routine send out tests and obtaining reports on send out tests from outside hospitals in a timely manner.
  • Ensure continuity of care for patient case material at the time of switching of pathologists between service assignments.
  • Act as a liaison to other services within the pathology department and clinicians. Assist with coordinating standard procedures and implementing new procedures that are necessary for study protocols.
  • Act as a contact regarding the status of patient case material and consult material.
  • Work closely with the Hematology/Hematopathology Laboratory Directors and Hematology Lab Supervisor in overseeing technologists in Bone Marrow preparation.
  • Assist in coordinating multidisciplinary conference issues including assuring the materials are ready for review, contacting the clinical services if problems arise, and follow-up of any issues that arise from conferences.
  • Coordinate the ordering of special tests as applicable on all Hematopathology services (Anatomic Pathology/Clinical Pathology).
  • Responsible for instituting and maintaining Hematopathology slide study sets, virtual study sets, and competency exams for residents rotating on the Hematopathology services.
  • Responsible for compiling QA/QC data for the Hematopathology services.
  • Responsible for coordination of fellow orientation and rotation schedule on the Hematopathology services. Serve as a contact for the fellows (or residents) rotating on the Hematopathology services.
  • Facilitate distribution of bone marrow aspirate samples from the Core Laboratory for biobanking.
  • Active involvement in LIS/HIS development and maintenance to ensure quality reporting of Hematopathology results.
  • Assist with manuscript submissions.
  • Serve as contact person for projects involving the Hematopathology services.
  • Assist with course coordination for the Medical Laboratory Science program.
  • Other duties as assigned by Hematopathology section head.
