About The Position

Tessera is seeking a knowledgeable and hands-on Heavy Equipment Mechanic Lead to support base operations at the U.S. Air Force Academy. This role is critical to maintaining the reliability and readiness of mission-essential equipment used across airfield, road, and infrastructure maintenance. The ideal candidate is a skilled technician with leadership experience, capable of diagnosing complex mechanical issues and guiding a team through efficient, safe, and high-quality repairs

Requirements

  • 5+ years of hands-on experience in heavy equipment maintenance and repair
  • Technical or vocational training in diesel mechanics, heavy equipment repair, or a related field preferred
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting technical manuals, schematics, and diagnostic tools
  • Familiarity with preventive maintenance schedules and reporting systems
  • CDL Class B required.
  • A valid state driver’s license is required with the ability to obtain and maintain coverage by Tessera’s insurance.
  • Access to a federal military installation requires a REAL ID-compliant driver's license or an acceptable alternative, such as a U.S. passport or military ID, in accordance with the REAL ID Act.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain applicable security clearances and installation access.
  • A background check and E-Verify will be conducted for this position.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate degree in automotive technology or mechanical engineering a plus, but not mandatory
  • CDL Class A preferred

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose, repair, rebuild, and maintain heavy equipment such as cranes, bulldozers, graders, trenchers, sweepers, and pneumatic tools used in base operations.
  • Perform inspections, disassemble and reassemble machinery, and conduct major repairs including engine and transmission replacements.
  • Interpret technical manuals, wiring diagrams, and hydraulic schematics to ensure accurate diagnostics and service.
  • Lead a team of mechanics by assigning tasks, setting deadlines, and overseeing completion of maintenance and repair projects.
  • Maintain vehicle service schedules and ensure accurate reporting of maintenance activities, incidents, and personnel documentation.
  • Train team members on equipment procedures, safety protocols, and technical standards to ensure consistent performance.
  • Monitor employee attendance, performance, and support evaluations and coaching in coordination with management.
  • Uphold safety compliance, proper PPE usage, and professional conduct across all work zones.
