About The Position

The Heavy Equipment Maintenance Mechanic is responsible for overseeing and performing maintenance, inspection, troubleshooting, and repair of heavy and stationary equipment used in our Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) and compost operations across multiple company sites. Equipment includes loaders, excavators, grinders, screens, conveyors, compactors, balers, and other recycling and production equipment essential to daily operations. This role ensures equipment operates safely, efficiently, and in compliance with company, environmental, and safety standards. The position requires advanced mechanical expertise, strong diagnostic skills, and the ability to manage maintenance schedules while supporting production uptime and mentoring assistant technicians.

Requirements

  • Minimum 5 years of hands-on experience maintaining heavy equipment
  • Required experience working on CAT loaders
  • Experience maintaining loaders, excavators, grinders, screens, conveyors, balers, and compactors
  • Strong engine, hydraulic, drivetrain, and electrical repair experience
  • Welding and fabrication experience required
  • Experience using software-based diagnostic programs for troubleshooting equipment
  • Basic computer skills and familiarity with maintenance management systems preferred
  • Valid Class C driver’s license with an acceptable driving record
  • Advanced knowledge of heavy industrial, recycling, and composting equipment
  • Proficiency with hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, and electronic control systems
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and diagnostic data
  • Strong mechanical troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to oversee work and provide direction to assistant technicians
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced production environment
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong time management and task prioritization abilities

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the maintenance program for heavy equipment across multiple company locations
  • Manage service schedules and preventive maintenance intervals for a variety of equipment, including:
  • Loaders
  • Excavators
  • Grinders
  • Screens
  • Conveyors, balers, compactors, and other production equipment
  • Perform routine equipment inspections and scheduled interval services
  • Diagnose and repair all major equipment systems, including:
  • Engines
  • Hydraulic systems
  • Drivetrain components
  • Electrical systems
  • Pneumatic and mechanical systems
  • Troubleshoot equipment failures and restore functionality quickly to minimize downtime
  • Perform welding, cutting, and fabrication for equipment repair or modification
  • Utilize software-based diagnostic programs to identify and resolve equipment issues
  • Direct and support assistant technicians during maintenance and repair activities
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records, including work orders, parts usage, and labor time
  • Operate forklifts, loaders, and other mobile equipment as needed to access or move equipment
  • Ensure all work meets safety, quality, and performance standards
  • Proactively identify and report equipment issues, hazards, and safety concerns to the Production Supervisor
  • Maintain a clean and organized work environment in accordance with 5S and safety standards
  • Follow all company policies, environmental regulations, and safety procedures, including lockout/tagout and confined space requirements
  • Participate in required safety meetings, training sessions, and maintenance workshops
