About The Position

A Hearing and Vision Tester (10 Months) tests the hearing and vision of school children in Baltimore City. Work of this class involves no supervisory duties or responsibilities. Incumbents receive moderate supervision from a technical superior. Employees in this class work a conventional work week. Work is performed in school room settings where there is minimal exposure to environmental hazards. Work requires carrying heavy audio and/or visual testing equipment in and out of school buildings.

Requirements

  • Have a high school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Have one year of experience providing services to children or families in a health, education or social services setting.
  • Have an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Have a valid Maryland Class C Noncommercial driver's license or an equivalent driver's license and eligible to obtain a Baltimore City driver’s permit. PROVISIONAL DRIVER’S LICENSE ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE.
  • Ability to learn the objectives and techniques of a hearing and vision testing program.
  • Ability to learn the skills required to operate the Audiometer, Good-Lite, Snellen Vision Chart and other vision screening equipment.
  • Ability to work quickly and thoroughly.
  • Ability to establish satisfactory relations with and solicit cooperation from children.
  • Ability to deal effectively with school principals, nurses and teachers.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records.
