About The Position

A Community Outreach Worker promotes programs and resources in the community and performs a variety of services to encourage citizen participation. The work of this class involves no supervisory duties or responsibilities. Incumbents receive close supervision from a technical superior. Employees work a conventional workweek that includes evening hours and may require weekend work. Work is performed both in an office under normal working conditions and in neighborhoods, where incumbents may be exposed to extremes of heat and cold. The work requires minimum physical exertion.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a GED certificate.
  • Have six months of paid experience performing community service work, providing information and referral services or promoting community activities.
  • Have an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Some positions in this class require a valid Maryland Class C Noncommercial driver’s license or an equivalent out-of-state driver’s license acceptable to the Office of Risk Management.
  • Ability to establish and maintain a good working relationship with co-workers, clients and patients of social and health programs.
  • Ability to initiate contacts with individuals in the community, develop trusting relationships and obtain information.
  • Ability to maintain activity logs, prepare statistical reports and complete simple forms.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to understand and explain basic social and health benefits.
  • Ability to motivate others.
  • Ability to research community resources.
  • Ability to maintain favorable public relations.
