About The Position

The Health Sciences Librarian at Dahlgren Memorial Library (DML) participates in the provision of research support, reference, outreach support and instruction to a broad range of patron groups affiliated with Georgetown University Medical Center (GUMC). This full-time staff position plays a significant role in connecting and promoting DML services and resources directly to users and provides support for their integration within the learning and research environments by providing reference and research support services [via different modalities such as in-person, telephone, email, chat, and web conferencing] to the students, faculty, staff, and researchers of GUMC, including: The School of Medicine [SoM], the Berkley School of Nursing [BSoN], the School of Heath [SoH], the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center [LCCC], the Biomedical Graduate Education [BGE] programs, Biomedical and Health Sciences Research Organizations and MedStar Georgetown University Hospital [MGUH]. In addition to traditional research and instructional services and in partnership with colleagues, the Health Sciences Librarian, supports the responsible and effective use of emerging technologies, including AI-assisted discovery, search, and summarization tools, within health sciences research and education. The librarian provides guidance to users on the appropriate application, limitations, bias, and transparency of these tools, particularly in the context of evidence synthesis and research support. The successful candidate will work with other librarians to advise DML Senior Management on best practices for the provision of research, reference and outreach services. The incumbent will assist DML Senior Management with development of systems and processes to effectively assess reference services including compilation and analysis of reference statistics for departmental review and contribution to reporting agencies. The incumbent will provide guidance to DML Senior Management on the development, promotion, and continuous improvement of reference and research services. The incumbent also serves on various DML, GUMC, and intra-campus committees, teams, and task forces as assigned.

Requirements

  • Master's Degree in Library and Information Science from an American Library Association accredited program or equivalent.
  • Strong and enthusiastic customer service orientation with demonstrated excellent oral, written, and organizational skills as well as a keen attention to detail.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively and work well with various members of an academic medical center community (students, faculty, staff, and clinicians).
  • Willingness to learn new skills [educable], adept at problem solving, and eager to share this knowledge.
  • Readiness to adapt to changes in technology and ability to work under pressure in a complex, dynamically changing environment.

Nice To Haves

  • One or more year experience providing reference and research support services in an academic health sciences library.
  • Experience searching and research skills working with bibliographic databases [PubMed, CINAHL, the Ovid platform, Web of Science, etc.] and citation managers [RefWorks, Zotero, EndNote, etc.].
  • Familiarity with systematic/scoping review methodology, including the development of comprehensive search strategies, tools used to facilitate citation screening, development of inclusion/exclusion criteria, evaluation of peer-reviewed research communications, etc.
  • AHIP [Academy of Health Information Professionals] accreditation preferred but not required; expected to pursue accreditation once hired.

Responsibilities

  • Communicates directly with patrons to provide reference and research support.
  • Performs literature searches and assists with evidence syntheses.
  • Helps patrons with citation management-related tasks.
  • Creates and maintains web-based and print-based documentation related to outreach and other specialized tasks.
  • Assists in education services by leading library-related workshops, creating instructional materials, and presenting departmental orientations and other curricular-based sessions.
