About The Position

The Health Sciences (HSCI) academic advisor assists students to explore academic interests, identify resources for additional information and support, and develop plans of study appropriate for meeting educational goals. Advisors typically counsel students on what courses to take and the graduation requirements of specific programs. The in-person advisor position requires regular and frequent communication with students through scheduled and drop-in appointments, email, phone, and/or virtual contact. In addition, advisors must be aware of and able to refer students to specialized staff for such issues involving counseling services, financial assistance, and career development support. The part-time HSCI academic advisor will carry a caseload of undergraduate students (first-year, sophomores, juniors, and/or seniors) and work 19 hours per week.

Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in education/ student/career advising or equivalent (Master’s degree preferred)
  • Experience: Experience working with students majoring in health-related fields

Nice To Haves

  • Teaching or academic coaching experience in college environment preferred

Responsibilities

  • Interacts with co-workers, visitors, and other staff consistent with the values of Jefferson.
  • Provide advising support through regular and frequent communication with advisees and maintain accurate records of work, including all interactions with students.
  • Assist students to develop educational goals, identify ways to achieve these goals, and track progress to ensure students meet all requirements to graduate.
  • Affirm students’ major choice, or assist in identifying new major, based on students’ interests and aptitude.
  • Become familiar with university policies, procedures, and planning requirements including course frequency (e.g. every other year offerings), prerequisites and co-requisites, program application deadlines, study away course planning, and internships.
  • Refer students to campus offices/resources such as Career Development, Accessibility Services, tutoring, Student Health Services, Counseling Center, Student Accounts, Financial Aid
