About The Position

The Health & Safety Specialist, reporting into the Director of Environmental & Health and Safety, is responsible for safety, health and environmental programs, policies, and procedures at Gateway Services Inc. This position will identify potential workplace hazards, participate in risk assessments, support the creation and implementation of EHS policies/ SOPs and facilitate training to employees on EHS subjects. The Health and Safety Specialist will also conduct audits, perform Risk, Assessments, participate in different EHS Projects., analyze key EHS metrics and manage Worker Compensation reporting and claims. The role will also support with all Return-to-Work programs for injured Team Members within a specific regional area.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Safety Engineering, Environmental Health, Environmental Engineering or a related field required.
  • Minimum of 4+ years of relevant work experience in the EHS (Environment, Health and Safety) field preferably in a manufacturing and distribution environment.
  • Skill in performing EHS inspections ensuring compliance with OSHA /OHSA/COHSA, NFPA, building Code, Electrical Safety and other relevant Safety Standards .
  • Proven ability to maintain the confidentiality of sensitive information and records.
  • Ability to gather data, compile information, analyze data and prepare reports.
  • Ability to develop, implement and execute EHS programs and protocols.
  • Skill in creating and developing training, material on different EHS Topics. Be able to facilitate training in person and online using different platforms and tools.
  • Skill to communicate and work with people at different levels of the organization.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local EHS regulations, protocols, and/or requirements and experience implementing solutions to comply to EHS regulations.
  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situation and provide effective guidance to Care Center Managers, Regional Managers and Team Members
  • Skill in developing EHS SOPs , WMS, Guidelines, Support Communications, Tool boxes., etc.
  • Ability to investigate and analyze technical information and draw conclusions.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse/multicultural environment.
  • Proficiency with database applications and administration systems, specifically Microsoft Office

Nice To Haves

  • Fleet safety experience is a plus.
  • Experience on EHS Management Systems (Participation in Certificating on ISO 14001, ISO 45001 is a plus.
  • Experience with accident investigation, workplace inspection and job hazard analysis are preferred
  • Occupational Health and Safety Certificate an asset

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with and assist with the development, implementation, and monitoring of EHS (Environment, Health, and Safety) policies, procedures, and programs.
  • Visit facilities in the US and Canada to conduct EHS inspections and audits to ensure compliance with all regulatory and legal entities (federal, state/ province, municipal, industry, etc.)
  • Ensure and support all programs to achieve the organization’s compliance to EHS codes, rules, and standards.
  • Actively take part on Incident Management and Investigation Processes, to identify root causes and to determine corrective actions to prevent accident reoccurrence in the future.
  • Recommend control measures to protect workers from potentially hazardous conditions work methods, processes, materials, behaviors, etc.
  • Ensure completion of mandatory OSHA/OHSA/CHSA, DOL/MOL or EPA, Environment Canada/MOE, MECP, MELCC/ MECCE, MEPA/and other EHS (Environment Health and Safety) related reporting and record keeping.
  • Identify opportunities to minimize workplace injuries, accidents, and occupational illnesses.
  • Support with and coordinate any EHS Governmental agency visit or investigation (e.g.: OHSA/COHS or DOL/MOL, etc.)
  • Manage worker compensation claims. Provide guidance and support for safe and timely return to work.
  • Collect and review incident, accident, and hazard reports and provide key data for EHS metrics.
  • Conduct training on all EHS matters and be a facilitator for JHS Committees (Canada) or Councils (US)
  • Participate in regular EHS meetings, updating employees on safety policies and any changes to workplace EHS best practices.
  • Have a leading role in some EHS Specific Projects.
  • Assist the EHS Director in all EHS matters.
