About The Position

Cleveland-Cliffs Steel has an immediate opportunity for a Safety Representative at our Burns Harbor, IN operation. The Safety Specialist is responsible for actively working with operating, maintenance, and staff departments in developing, implementing, and managing comprehensive safety and industrial hygiene programs. Cleveland-Cliffs Inc. is North America’s largest flat-rolled steel company and the largest iron ore pellet producer. The Company is vertically integrated from mined raw materials, direct reduced iron, and ferrous scrap to primary steelmaking and downstream finishing, stamping, tooling, and tubing. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Safety Management or significant experience in the field of safety.
  • Excellent communication (verbal and written), team building, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to effectively work in a team-oriented environment.
  • Self-motivated with minimal direction required for day-to-day operations.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • 3 years’ experience in a safety and health position.
  • Willing and able to work nights, weekends and/or holidays when on call or during extended outages.

Nice To Haves

  • Related experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Successful track record working with a represented workforce in a heavy industrial setting.
  • Knowledge of Safety and Health policies including OSHA Regulations.
  • Management system internal audit experience.
  • 5+ years of experience in an industrial safety and health position.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate visible safety leadership daily.
  • Act as a coach and mentor to line managers and supervisors in safety leadership and assist them in executing their safety responsibilities.
  • Partner with cross-functional teams, including operations, maintenance and engineering to integrate safety into all aspects of the business.
  • Support management during regulatory agency inspections.
  • Conduct regular safety inspections and audits of equipment, facilities and work practices to identify potential hazards and ensure compliance with all safety regulations.
  • Maintain and update safety programs and management systems (e.g., ISO 45001).
  • Stay current on evolving safety regulations and industry best practices.
  • Participate in incident and accident investigations using root cause analysis to determine causes and recommend corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Drive injury/fatality prevention (SIF) and hazard assessment efforts and activities.
  • Collaborate with engineering teams on the safe design and installation of new equipment and systems.
  • Develop and deliver safety training programs to employees at all levels.
  • Communicate safety information and performance metrics to management and employees.
  • Serve as a resource to and support the Plant Safety Committee.
  • Be a resource for safety meetings and safety training and provide technical assistance to employees on safety related issues.
