About The Position

The Health and Safety Manager at Stella-Jones performs and participates in procedures and programs to minimize health and safety risks across the organization while ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements. This is a regionally-focused, individual contributor role and part of our larger North American corporate health and safety team. This is a remote role to be based in the Southeast or Mid-Atlantic region of the United States and involves significant travel (up to 60%) to various manufacturing locations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Safety or a related field highly preferred
  • Five or more years of related Safety experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated competence in key areas of management and leadership expertise including; relationship management, staff direction and motivation, financial planning and control, risk management and the achievement of company’s safety goals
  • Working knowledge of OSHA regulations required. Knowledge of EPA regulations a plus
  • Experience with Worker’s Compensation injury reporting process required
  • Excellent understanding of safety best practices in a manufacturing environment
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form
  • Ability to participate in field activities
  • Excellent computer skills including MS Office Suite and ERP Systems
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret governmental regulations
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing within all levels of the organization and customers.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently as well as in team settings.
  • This position requires frequent overnight travel within the continental United States
  • Manages changing priorities while remaining calm and professional during potentially hazardous situations
  • Must be able to manage multiple assignments simultaneously and effectively use time management skills to meet deadlines.

Nice To Haves

  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as the primary technical resource for OSHA compliance, and the point of contact for safety and security concerns for multiple manufacturing locations.
  • Assists with the development and maintenance of the company’s Health, Safety and Security training programs, policies, plans and procedures.
  • Creates, implements and follows up on safety procedures and practices required by the company while ensuring that all state/local laws are incorporated across all sites, as appropriate.
  • Collaborates with plant managers to implement controls resulting in minimization of safety and occupational hazards.
  • Assists plant managers with interpreting and enforcing safety policies and procedures while rewarding for safety accomplishments.
  • Assists plant management with safety investigations, root cause analysis, and develops corrective actions as needed.
  • Represents facilities during regulatory, insurance, and other related audits and inspections.
  • Conducts risk assessments to minimize and/or eliminate accidents, losses, security breaches, and environmental issues.
  • Assists with Worker’s Compensation litigation (e.g. filling out questionnaires and researching information).
  • Management duties may include supervision of exempt and/or non-exempt staff. This includes but is not limited to, conducting performance evaluations and improvement plans, approving paid time-off (PTO), assigning or delegating work, providing on-the-job training, giving guidance to staff, taking disciplinary action, and interviewing candidates for open positions.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
