About The Position

The Environmental, Health & Safety Specialist plans, directs, and implements organization safety programs to ensure a safe, healthy, and accident-free work environment by performing the duties personally, through supervisors, and working closely with management. To ensure the safety and quality of the products that the line produces.

Requirements

  • Bachelors degree in a related field
  • 3 years of related environmental and safety experience (food manufacturing preferred).
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public in English and Spanish.
  • Ability to perform basic math skills, use decimals to compute ratios and percent, and to draw and interpret graphs.
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Well versed in OSHA, EPA, and DOT regulations.
  • Someone who has lead agency visits such as environmental inspections, fire department visits, etc.
  • To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Database software; Spreadsheet software and Word Processing software.
  • Able to learn and adapt to dashboards and other safety software.

Nice To Haves

  • Board of Certified Safety Professionals ASP or CSP certification preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Implements and coordinates safety policies and procedures in compliance with local, state, and federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) rules and regulations.
  • Develops, implements and evaluates programs to train all plant personnel in work site safety practices, fire prevention, and correct handling techniques for chemicals, toxins, equipment, and other materials
  • Assists/facilitates Safety Committee/Monthly Safety meetings with EHS Manager to provide training, identify issues, communicate and promote safety in the workplace across all shifts.
  • Inspects organization facilities to detect existing or potential accident and health hazards, determines corrective or preventative measures where indicated, and follows up to ensure measures have been implemented.
  • Maintains chemical management regarding approval/disapproval of all chemicals entering the facility, internal storage and usage and maintains all SDS for site.
  • Ensure safety issues are addressed in an effective and timely manner.
  • Able to lead the investigation of accidents, incidents, industrial injuries or illness and cooperates in the preparation of material and evidence for the organization use in hearings, lawsuits and insurance claims or proceedings.
  • Communicate and partner effectively with external medical providers, consultants, vendors, and contractors.
  • Prepares studies and analyses of industrial accident causes and hazards to health for use by company personnel and outside agencies.
  • Recommends, develops and implements new safety policies and procedures as a result of inspections, workplace injuries, and/or adoption of new regulatory guidelines by local, state or federal agencies.
  • Can collect and prepare stormwater samples and any other sampling that may be needed based on regulations.
  • Prepares, maintains, and submits reports, surveys, permit applications required by local, state, and federal agencies.
  • Manages third party safety consultants or service providers to implement and conduct specific safety compliance programs, analysis, research, investigations, etc.
  • Develop, train and maintain an effective Emergency Response Team to ensure appropriate response in the event of an emergency incident.
  • Represents the organization in community or industry safety groups and programs.
  • Manages and maintains annual safety budget including inventories of safety related equipment, tools, personal protective equipment, etc. for the manufacturing facilities.
  • Manages and provides information, signs posters, barriers, and other materials to warn of potential and actual safety hazards and to prevent access to hazardous conditions.
  • Maintains and updates safety files, records, all written programs and documents.
  • Assists in the oversight of facility security including but not limited to burglar and fire alarm systems, security camera system, access control, security guards, etc.
  • Assists in the administration of workers’ compensation program, including working with the insurance carrier and Human Resources to reduce employee lost time due to industrial injuries or illnesses.
