About The Position

The Health Physicist – Medical 2 position at The Ohio State University's Environmental Health and Safety department involves ensuring the timely completion of various radiation safety tasks, including radioactive sealed source inventories, leak tests, equipment calibrations, dose calibrator measurements, and radiological surveys. Responsibilities also include daily maintenance of waste storage facilities and radiation detection monitors, providing room setup, surveys, and decontamination for patient therapies, and offering patient consultation and education. The role requires performing exposure calculations, providing patient release criteria, reviewing the Quality Management Program, and developing/providing radiation safety training. Additionally, the individual will support radioactive materials programs, dosimetry, personnel exposure monitoring, registration of radiation generating devices, and decommissioning activities. This position requires participation in emergency response and is subject to 24-hour call-in for emergencies and patient situations. Successful completion of a criminal background check and the Trustworthy and Reliable process for access to increased control areas are mandatory.

Requirements

  • Successful completion of a criminal background check
  • Successfully complete within 90 days of employment the Trustworthy and Reliable process for access to areas of increased controls
  • Bachelor’s degree of science or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Two years of experience in the safe handling of radioactive materials and radiation generating devices
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience in implementation of compliance activities
  • Knowledge of state and federal radiation safety regulations

Responsibilities

  • Ensure the timely completion of radioactive sealed source inventories and leak tests
  • Ensure the timely completion of radiation detection equipment calibrations
  • Ensure the timely completion of dose calibrator accuracy and linearity measurements
  • Ensure the timely completion of radiological surveys
  • Daily maintenance of waste storage facilities and radiation detection monitors
  • Provide room setup, surveys, and decontamination for outpatient and inpatient therapies
  • Provide patient consultation and education prior to diagnostic and therapeutic procedures
  • Discuss precautions and patient concerns
  • Perform exposure calculations
  • Provide patient release criteria
  • Perform reviews of the Quality Management Program
  • Develop and/or provide radiation safety specific training
  • Provide for a periodic review of the security of radioactive materials
  • Provide for a periodic review of radiation safety postings
  • Support radioactive materials receipt, transportation, and waste disposal programs
  • Provide support to the OSUWMC dosimetry and personnel exposure monitoring program
  • Monitor adherence to training requirements
  • Provide support for the accurate registration of radiation generating devices
  • Support decommissioning activities
  • Participate in emergency response
  • Be subject to 24-hour call in response to emergency and patient situations
