About The Position

In the Department of URM Workplace Health and Safety and under the supervision of the Radiation Safety Officer or Assistant RSO, this role will manage and coordinate the radiation monitoring badge program for MUSC and MUHA. In addition, the incumbent will process Authorized User and Principal Investigator radioactive material license applications and renewals, maintain and monitor requests for access to areas containing materials in quantities of additional concern, and perform or assist in general radiation safety inspections. Previous knowledge of Radiation Safety, Dosimetry, or Health Physics preferred.

Requirements

A high school diploma and three years experience in environmental health programs or radiologic health.
A bachelor's degree in the natural or physical sciences, mathematics, public health, engineering or a related technical field may be substituted for two years of the required work experience.
Some postions require the possession of a valid Driver's license.
Some positions require the successful completion of specialized courses in health physics or certifcation as a health physicist.

Responsibilities

Manage and coordinate the radiation monitoring badge program for MUSC Enterprise in the capacity of "Dosimetry Badge Coordinator".
Acts as liaison between badge vendor and MUSC.
Conducts ongoing training for dosimeter coordinators throughout the Enterprise.
Responsible to ensure all 3200+ badges are delivered to badge coordinators monthly, quarterly, and semi-annually, ensure badges are received and shipped in timely manner.
Review records according to the frequency of each badge wearer with email notices sent to the wearers and the coordinators per standards of Radiation Safety as well as DHEC and TJC.
Keep dosimetry database up-to-date with activation of new badges and deactivation of badges for personnel no longer needing them.
Serve as point of contact for High Dose Notifications.
Keep log of lost radiation badges and tracks repeat occurrences of lost badges per individual.
Advises individuals and processes paperwork for those declaring as pregnant radiation workers.
Send out annual radiation dose summaries to personnel.
Obtain radiation dose histories for individuals having prior radiation exposure at other institutions and uploading into badge vendor database in compliance with SC DHEC and NRC Regulations.
Provide monthly dosimetry compliance reports to senior leadership, TJC, DHEC and CAPPS.
Work with MUSC Enterprise to maintain SC DHEC, Joint Commission and CAPPS records and inspections throughout all different campuses.
Complete Radiation Inspections for 6 outside clinics and on campus sites and reporting to Verge monthly.
Ensure that all Radioactive material and new equipment licenses are up to date and signed by the RSO.
Obtain and file compliance certificates of all Radiation Producing operators within Radiation Safety Protocol and Practices.
Assign training for all Radiation Producing Device users as well as Radioactive Material users, making sure training and compliance certificates are completed in accordance to regulations.
Ensure annual training for Radiation Oncology and Irradiator Users is up to date.
Collect required information and submit fingerprints and requests for Increased Controls per NRC requirements.
Work with Human Resources coordinating and submitting annual radiation exposure calculations.
Perform or assist in other duties falling under the category of Radiation Safety as directed by the Assistant RSO or the RSO.
Maintain miscellaneous records, assistance in providing guidance to regulations regarding use of medical lasers, including inventory updates, assist Radiation Safety personnel in preparing rooms for 131I patients and participating in radioactive waste removal from the Radiation Safety waste room to include obtaining quotes in accordance with DOT standards.
Perform radioactive wipe test of nuclear medicine areas. Enter them into a scintillation counter and report monthly results.
Maintain a meter calibration schedule for instruments, obtain quotes for service and arrange calibration service.
Monitor lead apron database for monthly survey compliance.
Assist the Laser Safety Officer, including ensuring there is always an accurate inventory of lasers on campus.
Serve as a member of the Emergency Response Team performing on-call and trouble call duties as assigned, has received training required by OSHA 1910.120
