About The Position

In conjunction with the Health and Nutrition Manager, implements and monitors the health, safety, and nutrition services for the Early Education and Child Care programs, including Early Head Start, Head Start, Migrant and Seasonal Head Start, and State Child Development Programs. Partners with staff, families, and community agencies to improve children's health outcomes. Supports CAPSLO's mission by promoting health and wellness that aids in the achievement of self-sufficiency.

Requirements

  • Must be fluent in two or more languages, including one that supports the needs of the program and community.
  • Bachelor's degree in Public Health, Community Health, Health Science, Health Administration, Biology, or Nutrition.
  • Must provide certificates of completion of approved pediatric first aid and pediatric CPR training within 30 days of hire. The employee is responsible for renewing and maintaining a valid CPR/first aid certification at all times.
  • Must have dependable, insured transportation and valid California Driver's License.

Nice To Haves

  • Supervisory, administrative or training/monitoring experience in a nutrition, community involvement, child care or Head Start program preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure that the health, safety, and nutrition content areas are in compliance with all applicable regulations, including the Head Start Program Performance Standards (HSPPS), Community Care Licensing regulations, and the USDA Child and Adult Care Food Program.
  • Monitor and follow up on children's health status records for expectant women and children from birth to five years of age, ensuring all health, dental, and nutrition requirements are up to date according to the HSPPS and California's Early and Periodic Screening, Diagnostic, and Treatment (EPSDT) schedule.
  • Monitor data entry into the ChildPlus database for health and nutrition content areas; perform quality assurance, generate reports, and support staff in maintaining accurate and usable data as needed.
  • Conduct site visits to child care centers and family child care homes throughout the program year to monitor compliance with health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Ensure that staff collaborate with county and state agencies, health service providers, and community partners to secure services for program families.
  • Provide nutrition and health education to children, caregivers, staff, and contracted partners.
  • Work with the Health and Nutrition Manager to provide health and safety training to staff and assist with the development, revision, and implementation of health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Observe children in center-based and family child care home settings and monitor for possible illness or safety concerns.
  • Participate in case review meetings.
  • Assist the Health and Nutrition Manager in responding to Internal Referrals for children with special health conditions and follow up with staff.
  • Order, distribute, and maintain inventory of health supplies.
  • Perform a variety of administrative tasks, including word processing (e.g., memorandums, agendas, minutes, reports), filing, copying, mailing, and processing insurance claims.
  • Accompany staff members on home visits to address health and safety issues in the home.
  • Perform hearing, vision, and blood pressure screenings.
  • Train staff to conduct hearing and vision screenings.
  • Attend staff meetings, conferences, trainings, and workshops.
  • Monitor and compile statistics for reports, including the annual Program Information Report.
