About The Position

The School Health Assistant, under the direction of the Medical Team, provides support, planning, and documentation in addressing the health needs of students; assisting in implementing the school health program; and providing appropriate care and/or referral for ill, medically fragile and/or injured students under the supervision of the medical team.

Requirements

  • Must possess a high school diploma; college degree preferred.
  • Must possess a current Medical Assistant Certification or Certified Nursing Assistant Certification
  • Experience in school nursing or pediatric nursing desired.
  • Must be certified in CPR and basic First Aid
  • Requires strong analytical and computer skills, excellent interpersonal and organizational skills, strong communications skills
  • Knowledge of applicable state and federal laws, rules, and regulations as they relate to public health.
  • Ability to work independently and make decisions in accordance with established policies and regulations.
  • General knowledge of public health management information systems and how to use them to support the school environment.
  • Knowledge and practical experience regarding basic computer skills, Microsoft Word, Access and Excel including MOS Certification as determined by Administration.
  • A willingness to learn and become proficient with all other current district standard software.
  • Demonstrates interest and participation in a wide range of professional growth opportunities through such activities as advanced coursework, in-service programs, conference attendance and/or other related activities.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with maintenance of annually updated site lists of significant health conditions, student exemptions, and students receiving medication.
  • Follow up on health care referrals by Medical Team and assist families in accessing needed services.
  • Complete screening information and review health information following the guidelines established by the school nurse as required by the state on all special education students Individual Education Plans (IEP's).
  • Assist with Scoliosis Screening, Growth and Development and AIDS education at the designated grade levels.
  • Reports incidents (e.g. fights, suspected child abuse, weapons, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining the personal safety of students and providing a positive learning environment; adhering to applicable laws, district policies, and procedures.
  • Adhere to a strong professional ethic and legal requirements for confidentiality regarding students' records; discreetly handle sensitive information.
  • Assist in organizing daily school procedures according to district policy in relation to the distribution of medications and implementation of student health plans.
  • Perform routine first aid procedures and assist in screening ill or injured children according to established procedures.
  • As scheduled by central office, the medical assistant shall visit each school on a regular basis.
  • Coordinate with the medical team to implement programs designed to upgrade health standards for students and staff.
  • Read, interpret, and follow rules, regulations, policies, and procedures
  • Complete required state reports on immunizations.
  • Maintains and updates medical emergency cards and health records for the purpose of providing information required by legal and professional standards.
  • Maintain and monitor supplies for classroom and field trip first aid kits
  • Communicates effectively with school nurse, staff, and parents regarding health care needs and concerns for the purpose of referring students in need of further medical treatment.
  • Investigate and report, as required, all communicable diseases such as measles, chicken pox, etc.
  • Be aware of and utilize the Clara Manning Sick Fund and the Child Wellness Fund which offers assistance to indigent children in need of medical, dental and vision care, etc.
