About The Position

The Catawba Indian Nation Heath Authority (CINHA) is looking for an experienced health educator or wellness lifestyle coach who has a strong understanding of disease management, weight management and obesity prevention. We are looking for someone who is enthusiastic, independent, and an efficient worker who can lead projects on their own or in teams of different sizes. The position will be on-site work. This position will take the lead on developing and implementing evidence-based disease management and coordinate health education initiatives. The Health Educator will work closely with CINHA leadership. The position will receive direct supervision from the Wellness Program Manager with nutrition guidance from the Catawba Service Unit’s Registered Dietitian. This position will oversee weight management, obesity prevention, injury prevention and smoking cessation programs. This position supports the CIN mission by promoting Catawba culture, education, and self-sufficiency while providing economic and health opportunities. This position is responsible to and subject to the CIN Personnel Policies and Procedures Manual.

Requirements

  • Education: bachelor's degree in nutrition, health, or other related field
  • Experience: 3-years of experience in health, education, or another related field
  • Reliable transportation
  • Knowledge of food systems and agricultural practices
  • Possess a clean, valid state Driver’s License and be insurable under the Tribe’s insurance policy
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office
  • Competent, clear, consistent, and timely communication via email and phone.
  • Competency completing large, collaborative, time-bound projects.
  • Competency planning and collaborating on programs
  • Competency working with or managing staff and volunteers with a broad range of work experience.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and organization skills.
  • Ability to complete a Lifestyle Coach training certificate program either virtually or in person.
  • Ability to complete a ServSafe or other food safety certification course.
  • Experience in providing culturally sensitive, person-centered, community-based services for all ages.
  • Flexible, outgoing, and able to work independently and productively without direct daily supervision.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.

Responsibilities

  • Have scheduled education/coaching group and individual sessions to help participants set and reach goals.
  • Use coaching sessions to connect with participants to understand their goals, motivations, and challenges.
  • Keep participants focused on their goals, build their confidence, and gain their commitment.
  • Use the curriculum structure to keep participants on track. This includes creating weekly goals and hydration/activity plans.
  • Plan and conduct hands-on cooking and meal prep. classes to support participants’ goals.
  • Confirm appointments and complete calls to ensure that participants are following their goals, self-monitoring their daily food intake and exercise, and attending their coaching session.
  • Make outbound calls to inactive participants.
  • Complete department operation tasks such as data collection, reporting, and procuring food orders for sessions.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Help maintain all fitness-related equipment and supplies.
  • Leading and overseeing volunteer groups or extra farm hands as needed.
  • Conduct community outreach, recruitment, and education.
