About The Position

The Mission of Student Health Services (SHS) is to build a healthy campus community by providing quality, caring, cost-effective, accredited ambulatory healthcare and health promotion services. As part of an institution of higher learning, CSUB SHS participates in the educational process by teaching students the skills for self-care, promoting their health, advocating for themselves and preventing diseases—thus enhancing their academic productivity and leading to a satisfying college experience. Under general supervision of the Director of Student Health Services, the Health Education Program Assistant works with the Director and Health Education Coordinator to assist in the development, delivery, and coordination promotion of health education programs and outreach activities. The position creates and maintains health education materials, manages outreach and inventory supplies, and provides logistical and administrative support for events and departmental initiatives. The incumbent assists with planning and facilitating workshops and events, preparing educational materials, and maintaining resources that are accurate, inclusive, and accessible. This position also contributes to program evaluation and assessment by collecting and organizing data, summarizing participation metrics, and assisting with accreditation requirements. Additional responsibilities include maintaining health education supplies and inventory, providing logistical and administrative support for departmental initiatives, and collaborating with campus and community partners to enhance student engagement. Through these efforts, the Health Education Program Assistant advances the SHS mission by supporting evidence-based health promotion initiatives and helping students develop lifelong wellness skills that contribute to their personal and academic success.

Requirements

  • EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE – High school diploma or equivalent or combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities.
  • SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES (SKA’s) – Regular and reliable attendance is required.
  • General knowledge of the techniques for collecting and compiling data, and the means of disseminating educational information to the public through various mass and audio or visual media.
  • Working knowledge of the elements of health education programming.
  • Ability to community effectively with individuals with various interests and from varying cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Ability to prepare and deliver informational talks or lead group discussions using visual and other aids and provide clear, understandable answers to questions which are raised by target group audiences.
  • Ability to conduct interviews or group discussions to obtain data on health habits and needs, observe reactions to questions and record or summarize findings.
  • Ability to conduct research using a variety of sources to develop and prepare educational materials.
  • Ability to draft simple staff reports and articles for publication in newsletters and bulletins.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with peers, target segments of the student community and representatives of the news media.
  • Demonstrated customer service experience requiring a very high level of diplomacy and professionalism.
  • Ability to use tact and diplomacy to effectively handle a broad range of high level and sensitive interpersonal situations with diverse personalities, and to respond appropriately to conflicts and problems.
  • Ability to initiate, establish, and foster communication and teamwork by maintaining a positive, cooperative, productive work atmosphere in the University with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within a diverse population and with those from various cultural backgrounds.

  • Excellent computer skills and competence with a variety of computer applications including word-processing, spreadsheets, databases, on-line systems, Internet as well as online calendaring and email.
  • Working knowledge of or ability to quickly learn University infrastructure.
  • Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.
  • Must be able to work overtime, occasional holidays, and adjust working hours to meet special jobs.
  • May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.

Nice To Haves

  • Professional certifications in nutrition or stress management.
  • Demonstrated experience with institutional systems or software such as Taskstream, 25Live, or Qualtrics.
  • Experience or certification in assessment and evaluation practices within an education setting.
  • Demonstrated skills in an institutional/educational environment possessing a customer-oriented and service-centered attitude.

Responsibilities

  • Health Education & Specialty Initiatives Support Assist in planning, implementing, and evaluating health promotion initiatives focused on nutrition, stress management, mindfulness, sexual health, and overall well-being.
  • Assist in developing and facilitating workshops, presentations, and outreach events that engage students through interactive activities and discussions.
  • Create, maintain, and review health education materials, displays, and online content to ensure accuracy, accessibility, and inclusivity.
  • Evaluate suitability of materials and recommend updates or redesign to enhance effectiveness.
  • Partner with campus and community organizations (e.g., Food Services, Counseling Center, Food Pantry, student clubs) to coordinate events, campaigns, and demonstrations that promote healthy behaviors.
  • Identify emerging student needs and assist in adapting programs and resources based on evidence-based practices and assessment data.
  • Assist in conducting follow-up activities, including sharing resources with participants, summarizing results, and documenting lessons learned for continuous improvement.
  • Develop and maintain a comprehensive resource guide of on-campus and off-campus well-being services including nutrition, stress management, sexual health, and community support program to ensure students have access to accurate and up-to-date wellness resources.
  • Program Evaluation & Data Support Assist in conducting various surveys, including patient satisfaction surveys, focus groups, and needs assessments to identify student health needs and barriers and inform program evaluation and improvement.
  • Support data collection, entry, records maintenance and analysis for program evaluation, attendance tracking, and assessment of Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs).
  • Compile, upload, and submit program data, summaries, and reports to the Health Education Coordinator for reporting and analysis.
  • Outreach, Events, & Student Engagement Assist in planning, coordinating, and facilitating Student Health Services (SHS) outreach activities including health fairs, orientations, workshops, presentations, tabling, and virtual programs.
  • Represent SHS at campus events to educate students about available health and wellness services, including assisted abortion, gender affirming care, immunizations, naloxone, etc., and encourage participation in SHS programs.
  • Provide logistical and on-site support for outreach and educational activities, including event setup, materials preparation, and post-event follow-up.
  • Collaborate with student organizations and other campus partners to expand program reach and engagement.
  • Support program delivery across all SHS focus areas, including ATOD prevention, sexual health education, health equity (HEAL) and women’s & men’s health.
  • Participate in the Student Health Advisory Committee (SHAC).
  • Attend approved trainings and webinars to stay current on college health education and wellness trends.
  • Administrative & Operational Support Order, track, and maintain inventory of health education supplies, outreach materials, and promotional items.
  • Maintain organized storage and tracking systems for materials and event supplies.
  • Compile and organize health education materials for accreditation reviews and internal audits.
  • Prepare and reconcile ProCard purchases, coordinate and track print shop requests, and maintain program spreadsheets to track program data.
  • Provide administrative support for meetings, including preparing agendas, recording minutes, and distributing notes.
  • Serve as back-up for wellness vending machine operations and website content updates.
