About The Position

The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) is one of the largest, most complex agencies in the state, and has approximately 17,000 employees. It is responsible for ensuring the health, safety, and well-being of all North Carolinians, providing human service needs for special populations including individuals who are deaf, blind, developmentally disabled, and mentally ill, and helping poor North Carolinians achieve economic independence. The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) / Health Care Technician-II (HCT-II) is responsible for providing basic nursing, oral care hygiene and personal care needs including mouth care to assigned residents. They are also responsible for providing basic nursing and personal care to assigned residents on their assigned unit. This position is considered mandatory, which means that employees are required to report to work during adverse weather and emergency conditions. Longleaf Neuro-Medical Treatment Center (LNMTC), located in Wilson, NC, is a state-operated certified Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF). With a staff of about 520, LNMTC provides support to approximately 200 residents with complex medical needs and/or co-existing neuro-cognitive disorders. THIS POSITION IS DESIGNATED MANDATORY AND MUST REPORT OR STAY OVER DURING ADVERSE WEATHEREVENTS OR OTHER EMERGENCIES.

Requirements

  • Working Directly with individuals with Dementia and/or Intellectual Developmental Disabilities
  • Experience with staff training and the ability to respond to emergency situations
  • Must be patient, tactful, cheerful, courteous and enthusiastic
  • Ability to relate well with people
  • Willingness to learn and ability to listen
  • Basic knowledge of a variety of psychiatric, intellectual disabilities, medical and/or other related conditions.
  • Basic knowledge of teaching strategies and positive behavior support for people with severe cognitive deficits.
  • Ability to follow the treatment plans and/or clinical orders.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with individuals, staff and others.
  • Ability to learn behavior management and supportive counseling techniques.
  • High school or General Educational Development diploma and one year of related work experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • As required, listing as a Nurse Aide I by the North Carolina Division of Health Service Regulation.
  • As applicable, listing as a Nurse Aide II by the North Carolina Board of Nursing.
  • As applicable, North Carolina Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification.
