About The Position

With moderated direction or supervision, this machine operator position requires the operation and basic set-up of numerically controlled horizontal lathes to perform machining operations, such as turning, boring, facing. Threads parts such as castings, forgings and bar stock. The incumbent will possess and demonstrate the skills necessary to maintain production requirements and quality standards.

Requirements

  • HS Diploma or GED
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience as a Lathe Operator.
  • Fluent in English (both strong verbal and written communication skills)
  • Ability to complete the Job Skill Training Matrix for a Lathe Operator.
  • Ability to use all gages and gaging techniques required.
  • Basic computer knowledge.
  • Ability to perform basic set-up and operate one or more sizes/types of manufacturing equipment.
  • Ability to consistently meet production and quality standards.
  • Ability to demonstrate the knowledge and understanding of all required operator documentation.
  • Good teamwork skills.

Responsibilities

  • Reads blueprint and job order for product specifications to determine machining to be done, dimensional specifications, set up and operational requirements.
  • Operates and performs basic set up of equipment as required.
  • Inspects parts for quality and appropriate tolerance using measuring tools such as micrometers, calipers, and comparators.
  • Maintains specifications by observing operations and checking for malfunctions while inspecting the parts.
  • Documents actions by completing production and quality logs.
  • Inserts beginning point of tape in reading head of control unit.
  • Mounts work piece between centers, in chuck, or to face plate, manually or using hoist.
  • Depresses buttons, toggles, or sets tape and starts machining operation.
  • Observes numerical displays on control panel and compares with data on process sheet to verify dimensional adjustments, feed rate, and seeps of machining cuts.
  • Turns dials and switches to override tape control and correct machine performance, applying practical knowledge of lathe operation.
  • Studies job packet and organizes materials for next run during automatic tape-controlled cycles to shorten change over time.
  • Must follow all safety rules.
  • Maintain clean, orderly work area.
  • Performs preventative maintenance when required.
  • Assist other operators as needed.
  • Suggest process improvement ideas.
  • All other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
