About The Position

Phoenix Tailings is a rapidly growing clean mining and metals production startup dedicated to sustainable and economic critical metals production. Phoenix Tailings is looking for a strategic and execution-oriented Head of Communications to own and scale our external voice. This role is laser-focused on public relations—getting Phoenix Tailings in front of the right audiences, at the right time, with the right message. You will be responsible for building our presence across major news organizations and industry outlets to reach aerospace primes, government leaders, policymakers, and strategic partners. The ideal candidate understands how to position a technically complex, mission-critical company in a way that resonates with decision-makers who shape markets, policy, and supply chains.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of experience in communications or public relations, with a strong emphasis on earned media
  • Proven track record securing coverage in top-tier national or industry publications
  • Experience communicating with or targeting aerospace, defense, government, or industrial audiences
  • Strong ability to translate complex technical or industrial concepts into clear, compelling narratives
  • Exceptional writing, editing, and storytelling skills
  • Experience working directly with executive teams in high-growth or mission-driven organizations
  • Comfort operating independently in a fast-moving startup environment
  • Exceptional project management skills, with experience managing complex, multidisciplinary initiatives.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to convey technical concepts to diverse audiences.

  • Background in deep tech, industrials, energy, defense, or government relations strongly preferred

Responsibilities

  • Own and execute Phoenix Tailings’ public relations strategy to significantly increase visibility with aerospace, defense, and government stakeholders
  • Secure earned media coverage across major national, business, and industry publications
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with journalists, editors, and media outlets covering aerospace, defense, energy, manufacturing, and national security
  • Develop compelling narratives around Phoenix Tailings’ technology, mission, milestones, and impact
  • Position company leadership as trusted voices on critical metals, domestic manufacturing, and supply chain resilience
  • Lead communications around major announcements including facility launches, partnerships, government engagements, and funding milestones
  • Prepare executives for media interactions, interviews, and public-facing engagements
  • Manage external PR agencies or consultants as needed, with clear accountability for outcomes
  • Ensure messaging consistency across press, website, events, and external communications
