About The Position

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Under the supervision of the Facilities Director the Maintenance Mechanic performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled manual works in the maintenance and janitorial fields. The maintenance worker is responsible for the upkeep, repair and safety of all parts of the facility including all custodial tasks, mechanical equipment, swimming pool filtration systems, exterior works of the properties. The work requires the performance of all functions to be completed in a responsible, safe and efficient manner. Work to be performed in the interior and exterior of the Lawrence Branch but also contribute to all Merrimack Valley YMCA properties and holdings. Under close and general supervision learns and performs a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled work in the Janitorial, Plumbing, Electrical and HVAC fields as well as other general maintenance duties required to insure the safe, clean and efficient operation of the facility. In absence of the Facilities Director will direct staff and will be regularly scheduled on-call nights and weekends (2x per month.)

Requirements

  • Must be able to read, write and follow oral and written instructions in English.
  • Must be able to work flexible schedule at times and be able to take On-Call responsibilities in rotation with other members of Maintenance Staff.
  • Must have good interpersonal qualities to deal with the public, staff and outside agencies.
  • Must be able to lift 75 lbs. without assistance and walk/stand for seven hours to perform assigned tasks during shift.
  • Must be CPR/AED Certified. Have a current Commercial Pool Operators certificate or equivalent.

Nice To Haves

  • Prefer experience in trades and/or basic knowledge of Building, Carpentry, Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing and an understanding of general Landscaping procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Sweep, mop, dust, clean floors, walls, tables as needed
  • General preventive maintenance
  • Clean doors and polish stainless steel doors as needed
  • Clean and disinfect all bathrooms, locker rooms, classrooms, kitchen, wellness center rooms, gymnasium and swimming pools, and all other areas as needed
  • Clean and disinfect any surface contaminated from any release of bodily fluids and properly dispose of waste
  • Set up / breakdown rooms as needed
  • Maintain inventory of janitorial supplies
  • Vacuum rugs and floors as needed
  • Operate floor maintaining equipment
  • Repair and replacement of ceiling tiles and grids as needed
  • Maintain and repair of all maintenance department equipment
  • Painting as needed
  • Work with Facilities Director to:
  • Monitor swimming pool filter and chlorinating systems and treat as needed
  • Monitor boilers and hot water tank and treat as needed
  • Perform weekly testing of boiler water and treat as needed
  • Perform scheduled maintenance on HVAC equipment
  • Monitor and maintain pneumatic controls in facility.
  • Monitor and maintain DDC control system for HVAC equipment as required for comfort and air quality of interior environment of facility.
  • Perform simple repairs to all HVAC, plumbing, electrical equipment and swimming pool filtration systems as directed by Maintenance Director
  • Perform scheduled monthly inspections of emergency lighting system, fire extinguishers, exit lighting and repair as needed
  • Perform repairs to interior lighting systems as needed
  • Perform other duties requested by Maintenance Director
