About The Position

The Head Lifeguard is responsible for the effective management of the lifeguard team. Additionally, they are responsible for the safety and well-being of patrons while visiting Lancaster County Swimming Pool. This professional position requires excellent administrative and organizational skills, strong swimming ability, superb rescue skills and consistent enforcement of facility rules and regulations.

Requirements

• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• Must provide current Lifeguard Certification as required in the PA Bathing Code
• Must be a strong swimmer with the ability to perform the American Red Cross Lifeguard swim test
• Must have PA State Police Background check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance and FBI Fingerprint Background check
• Successful completion of a pre-employment drug screen
• Excellent administrative and organizational skills
• Ability to supervise staff of various ages
• Accurate record-keeping
• Maintain excellent physical fitness with the ability to complete the American Red Cross Lifeguard swim test
• Thorough knowledge of American Red Cross rescue methods and "assist" techniques
• Thorough knowledge of American Red Cross First Aid procedures and standards of care
• Thorough knowledge of American Red Cross CPR/AED techniques and standards of care
• Ability to maintain focus and alertness while on duty
• Ability to exercise discipline and initiative in planning, organizing and implementing assigned work.
• Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing, and to speak before large groups
• Excellent interpersonal skills.
• Must provide current Lifeguard Certification as required in the PA Bathing Code
• Successful completion of pre-employment drug screening.
• Pennsylvania State Police Criminal Record Check
• Pennsylvania Child Abuse History Clearance
• FBI Background Check
• Maintain excellent physical fitness with the ability to complete the American Red Cross Lifeguard swim test
• Climbing steps to elevated lifeguard chairs
• Lifting equipment to waist up to 40 lbs
• Visual definition to identify distressed swimmers
• Ability to hear questions at a conversational tone
• Ability to stand and walk up to 3 hours continuously
• Ability to speak clearly and loudly enough to be heard by large groups
• This position has been identified as having the potential for exposure to Hepatitis B as the incumbent has a "duty to respond" and render first aid

Responsibilities

• Direct supervision of the lifeguard staff
• Ensuring that all PA Department of Health and Lancaster County Safety Guidelines are followed at all times
• Developing an effective lifeguard rotation on a daily basis
• Creating and implementing weekly in-service trainings for lifeguards
• Documenting employee discipline issues as outlined in the County Employee Manual
• Completing mid-season performance evaluations for all lifeguards
• Monitors patrons in the swimming pool and on the pool deck
• Performs rescues as needed using American Red Cross rescue methods
• Provides first aid to patrons as needed according to American Red Cross standards of care-Provides CPR and Rescue Breathing as needed according to American Red Cross standards of care
• Has a working and functional knowledge of all safety, rescue and first aid equipment and the location of each item
• Enforces facility rules and regulations
• Exercises mature judgement at all times
• Completes daily safety checklists and reports
• Assists with the implementation of group and private Learn to Swim lessons
• Attends weekly management team meetings
• Assists with keeping the facility clean
• Maintains and inventories rescue, safety, swim lesson and first aid equipment
• Regularly works weekends and holidays
• Assists with planning and implementing special events
• Performs other duties as assigned.
