About The Position

The City of Aurora is seeking a dedicated leader to join our team as a Head Lifeguard. You will provide essential first-level supervision to our lifeguard staff and ensure a safe, welcoming environment for all pool guests. The City of Aurora will conduct ongoing screenings of applications on a first-come, first-served basis; as soon as we determine that we have a qualified pool of applicants, this position may close quickly and without notice. This job announcement is for collecting candidate applications for current and future Head Lifeguards. Applicants will be contacted only when a position need is identified , and qualifications match the needs of the position. Position overview. Head lifeguards provide first level supervision of lifeguard staff and provide next level customer service. The head guard may act as a manager on duty in the absence of a MOD or Supervisor.

Requirements

  • An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.
  • Education: High School Diploma or GED
  • Experience: 6 months of lifeguard experience
  • Knowledge: Knowledge of pool safety and emergency action plans.
  • Working knowledge of computers, internet access, and the ability to navigate within a variety of software packages such as Excel, Word, and PowerPoint required.
  • Demonstrated aptitude for the financial aspects of managing departmental budgets.
  • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal service including needs assessment, problem resolution and achievement of quality service standards.
  • Skills: Advanced skills in lifesaving techniques and emergency response.
  • Highly skilled in customer relations.
  • Able to pass lifeguard certification course.
  • Abilities: Ability to maintain a safe environment at work sites.
  • Able to visually scan pools to prevent and respond to emergency situations.
  • Successfully complete the StarGuard Elite lifeguard training and earn a license, complete the physical requirements of the Swim Test Demonstrate the ability to swim 50 meters using freestyle or breaststroke without rest or touching the pool bottom, retrieve a 10 lb. weight from the deepest part of the pool (minimum of 6ft), tread water for 1 (one) minute, and submerge and swim a minimum of 6 meters underwater.
  • Must be able to stand in the sun during work assignment
  • Licenses and Certifications Required: Starguard lifeguard certification
  • Swim Lesson Instructor.
  • LGT is required within 6 months of hire.
  • LGI is required within 1 year of hire.
  • Continuous speech communication and hearing to maintain communication with employees and citizens.
  • Continuous walking, standing, swimming.
  • Essential Personnel: When a local announcement of emergency or disaster is declared by the City, all City of Aurora employees may be required to work as essential personnel.
  • Physical Demands: Heavy work that involves moving no more than 100 pounds with or without assistance at a time with May require regular standing and walking. May require bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, climbing, and swimming. Hand/eye coordination for operation of life safety equipment. Vision to read reports and other written material. Frequent speech communication and hearing to maintain communication with employees and citizens.
  • Works both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions with exposure to dust, noise, chemicals, water, and other conditions found in an aquatic environment.
  • Operates equipment related to aquatic facility operations.
  • The city of Aurora will implement furlough days (unpaid days off) for most employees in 2026. The scheduled furlough dates are January 16, April 10, July 2, and December 24.

Responsibilities

  • Determines the dynamic blind spots that result from varying weather patterns and adjusts guarding accordingly.
  • Reports any issues or concerns to MOD or Supervisor.
  • Responsible for teaching swimming lessons a minimum of one day per week at home pool (programming dependent).
  • Assists with training sessions of guards.
  • Determines guard rotation and ensures vigilant 10/20 scans.
  • Works with patrons on issues and incidents that arise at the pool.
  • May perform chemical, pump room and pool check.
  • First responder for first aid to patrons.
  • Initializes, coordinates, and progresses the emergency action plan.
  • Supervises cleanup of body fluids and fecal accidents.
  • Set up and verify that supplies and equipment are available during operating hours and replenish, clean and maintain as needed.
  • In the absence of the manager the headguard will assume the administrative responsibility of the lifeguard manager.
  • Assists in house audits and lifeguard vigilance tests.
  • Ensures the open decks and attractions are maintained in a clean and orderly fashion.
  • Maintains a high degree of “floor presence” to observe operations with strong focus on safety & security.
  • Focus on lifeguard staff rotations from pool to pool, children monitoring, interaction of lifeguard staff with Guests, and enforcement of guest conduct policy.
  • Safe & timely opening & closure of pools
  • Be alert to potential accident hazards and administer first aid and CPR as required.
  • Ensure the well-being of our Guests, keeping pool areas clean, answering Guest questions, enforcing policies, rules and regulations of Recreation locations.
  • Be fully qualified as a licensed StarGuard ELITE lifeguard.
  • Participate in regular training, including but not limited to, StarGuard Lifeguard, CPR/First Aid, AED, recurring in-service training, re-certification, and any other as deemed appropriate from management.
  • Participate and facilitate (once Instructor Certification is achieved) all Lifeguard initial and re-certification training and provide facilitation for all internal audits, in-service trainings.
  • Uphold the general safety management responsibilities in areas and operations under their control.
  • Attend emergency duties / drills as assigned in the pool Emergency Management Safety Plan.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
