About The Position

The Head Grower is responsible for the overall strategy, planning, and execution of crop production across the entire facility. This role leads the growing team—including Lead Growers and their respective teams—to ensure optimal plant health, yield, and quality standards. The Head Grower oversees all greenhouse systems, crop scheduling, resource allocation, and compliance with food safety and sustainability standards. This position plays a critical role in aligning growing operations with business objectives and customer demand.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in horticulture, agronomy, plant sciences, or related field (Master’s preferred).
  • Minimum 7 years of experience in controlled environment agriculture (CEA) or greenhouse operations.
  • At least 3 years in a leadership role managing multiple teams or zones.
  • Expertise in climate control systems and advanced crop modeling.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; proficiency in Microsoft Office and greenhouse management software.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills with the ability to coach and develop others.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and respond to operational challenges promptly.

Responsibilities

  • Directly manage Lead Growers and provide strategic guidance for their teams.
  • Develop and implement training programs for growing staff to ensure technical excellence and adherence to SOPs.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Create and manage crop production schedules based on sales forecasts and operational capacity.
  • Monitor crop performance and adjust strategies to optimize yield, quality, and resource efficiency.
  • Oversee pest and disease management programs, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure proper functioning of climate control, irrigation, and fertigation systems across all zones.
  • Approve fertilizer formulations and application schedules.
  • Analyze data from climate computers and water systems to make informed decisions.
  • Develop and manage the site-level growing department budget, including labor, materials, and utilities.
  • Approve purchasing of growing supplies and equipment.
  • Track and report on key performance indicators for crop yield, resource utilization, and cost efficiency.
  • Ensure adherence to food safety standards.
  • Maintain documentation for audits and certifications.
  • Promote a safe working environment and enforce safety protocols.
  • Partner with Operations and Sales teams to align production with market demand.
  • Participate in leadership meetings to provide updates on growing performance and strategic initiatives.
