Samaritan Daytop Village serves over 33,000 New Yorkers annually within your neighborhoods and communities so our success depends on those we employ. The Role Under general supervision, the Head Cook is responsible for providing supervision of the kitchen as well as cooking staff in a Transitional Housing setting. This work is carried out in support of the mission and goals of Samaritan Daytop Village.

Requirements

  • Someone with a High School Diploma, High School Equivalency, or Culinary School training
  • Food Protection Certificate issued by the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.
  • At least Two (2) years of relevant experience as a Cook in a restaurant or similar environment such as the NYC Department of Homeless Services (DHS) or another similar city-operated organization.
  • Good understanding of various cooking methods, ingredients, equipment, and procedures.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills to interact effectively with clients and staff.
  • Available to work a flexible schedule as needed in response to participant and staff needs.
  • Computer literacy including proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

Responsibilities

  • Provides Food Services supervision to cooks toward building proficiency in institutional cooking.
  • Supervise and maintain clean food preparation areas, cooking surfaces, equipment, and utensils.
  • Monitors compliance with nutrition, sanitary regulations, and safety standards in work areas.
  • Ensures that all food service operations comply with health and safety codes while adhering to the agency menu plan.
  • Ensures meals are prepared and served (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) according to the Department Of Health as well as the Department of Homeless Services regulatory guidelines.
  • Evaluate inventory and order kitchen materials within the guidelines of established purchasing protocols.
