Wheeling University is seeking a driven coach to build our Women’s Wrestling Program from the ground up. This role offers an exciting opportunity to develop a new program focused on competitive excellence, student-athlete success, and positive representation of the University. The coach will lead all aspects of the program, including coaching, recruiting, academic oversight, and program operations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Demonstrated knowledge of women’s wrestling techniques, rules, and training methodologies.
  • Prior coaching experience at the high school, collegiate, club, or equivalent competitive level.
  • Demonstrated ability to recruit and develop student-athletes.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Commitment to the academic success and personal development of student-athletes.
  • Knowledge of and commitment to compliance with all relevant rules and regulations.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and travel as required.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and be legally authorized to work in the United States. The University is unable to provide visa sponsorship for this position at this time.

Responsibilities

  • Trains and prepares student-athletes by teaching sport-specific skills, tactics, and philosophy; planning and directing practices; and overseeing physical training and conditioning during both in-season and off-season periods.
  • Coaches and develops student-athletes of all performance levels by identifying potential, building strengths, encouraging growth outside comfort zones, and implementing strategies to improve individual and team performance.
  • Monitors and supports student-athlete academic progress in coordination with the Faculty Academic Representative, Academic Coordinator, and Registrar; establishes study halls; facilitates tutoring and mentoring; and ensures academic eligibility and accurate NCAA compliance reporting.
  • Recruits, scouts, and evaluates prospective student-athletes in compliance with NCAA, conference, and University regulations; assesses athletic ability and academic readiness; determines eligibility; and coordinates scholarships in accordance with the University’s approved model.
  • Oversees graduate assistants, including hiring, training, supervision, performance evaluation, and ongoing feedback.
  • Provides leadership by setting professional standards, communicating expectations, offering feedback and encouragement, and fostering a positive, collaborative team environment.
  • Manages staff and resources effectively by coordinating people, ideas, and materials to meet program goals and operational deadlines.
  • Supports overall program operations, including budgeting, equipment and uniform purchasing, coordinating medical examinations, scouting opponents, preparing game plans, and arranging team travel.
  • Represents the University and sport program professionally through participation in athletic events, collaboration with Sports Information on media and public relations efforts, and promotion of program activities.
  • Communicates the University’s mission, vision, and values with professionalism, enthusiasm, and integrity.
  • Performs duties independently with minimal supervision while effectively taking and providing direction as appropriate.
  • Maintains an approachable, professional demeanor; builds rapport with student-athletes, staff, and stakeholders; and utilizes recruiting software and professional networks to support program objectives.
  • Maintains regular office consultation hours and performs other related duties as assigned.
