About The Position

Advanced Technologies and Laboratories (ATL), a Planned Systems International (PSI) company, is hiring for a Hazardous Materials Specialist (Designator) in Richland, WA. This position will support Navarro-ATL. Navarro-ATL is located in Richland, WA and operates, manages, and maintains the 222-S Laboratory Complex for the Department of Energy. Navarro-ATL members are Navarro Research and Engineering, Inc. (Oak Ridge, TN), and Advanced Technologies and Laboratories International (Gaithersburg, MD). Essential Functions and Job Responsibilities Under general supervision, scopes technical tasks and develops creative solutions to assigned problems of basic to high complexity. Provides characterization and program support for all radiological and non-radiological waste types (i.e., Low Level Waste, High Level Waste, Mixed Waste, Polychlorinated Biphenyls, and Transuranic Waste). Provides broad-based technical and regulatory support for ongoing HLMI waste management efforts. Provides technical support for specific projects as needed. Performs calculations to support waste management and characterization efforts. Creates and identifies documentation to be revised (e.g., waste streams profiles, procedures, forms) based on the regulations, results of calculations and other efforts, updates documents accordingly. Supports effective implementation and regulatory compliance of waste management programs. Performs and reviews waste designations. Provides general facility and project waste management support for packaging, shipping and disposition of Low-Level Waste, High Level Waste, Mixed Waste, Polychlorinated Biphenyls, and Transuranic Waste. This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, and filing cabinets. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may potentially be exposed to chemical, biological and physical, radiological, industrial and construction hazards, high noise, uneven terrain and adverse weather conditions (heat and cold). Under general supervision, scopes technical tasks and develops creative solutions to assigned problems of basic to moderate complexity. Incorporates conventional engineering or scientific practices to a variety of technical requirements to meet HLMI’s Waste Program needs. Prepares waste stream profile technical documentation, to support calculations, and incorporates into Waste Certification Plans. Provides guidance and direction to facility personnel involved waste management, packaging, and transportation. Performs field walk downs and assessments to ensure field work is performed to meet waste stream profiles, calculations and procedures. Reviews work packages for potential generation of waste streams and provide guidance for dispositioning of the waste. Prepares Waste Program manuals and procedures. Evaluate hazardous materials packaging, transportation, handling and associated activities for compliance and acceptability. Develop and implement programs and procedures for packaging, transport, and disposal of hazardous materials. Participate in the corrective action process. Other duties as assigned. Perform peer verification on hazardous materials offered for shipment.

Requirements

  • Grade 16 Bachelor’s degree (BA/BS) in related field and 5 years of related experience, or equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • Grade 18 Bachelor’s degree (BA/BS) in related field and 8 years of related experience, or equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
