About The Position

Advanced Technologies and Laboratories (ATL), a Planned Systems International (PSI) company, is hiring for a Hazardous Materials Specialist (Shipper) in Richland, WA. This position will support Navarro-ATL. Navarro-ATL is located in Richland, WA and operates, manages, and maintains the 222-S Laboratory Complex for the Department of Energy. Navarro-ATL members are Navarro Research and Engineering, Inc. (Oak Ridge, TN), and Advanced Technologies and Laboratories International (Gaithersburg, MD). The Hazardous Materials Specialist provides characterization and program support for all radiological and non-radiological waste types (i.e., Low Level Waste, High Level Waste, Mixed Waste, Polychlorinated Biphenyls, and Transuranic Waste). Provides broad-based technical and regulatory support for ongoing HLMI waste packaging and shipments. Provides technical support for specific projects as needed. Performs calculations to support waste management, characterization, and other efforts, and update documents accordingly. Supports effective implementation and regulatory compliance of waste management programs. Provides general facility and project waste management support for packaging, shipping, and disposition of Low-Level Waste, High-Level Waste, Mixed Waste, Polychlorinated Biphenyls, and Transuranic Waste. Scopes technical tasks and develops creative solutions to assigned problems of basic to high complexity. Incorporates conventional engineering or scientific practices to a broad range of highly complex technical requirements to meet program needs. Participates in waste planning activities, assist waste generators in the compliant packaging of waste, including mixed, low-level, hazardous, recyclable, and non-regulated. Interfaces with union, management, engineers, and professionals, as well as regulators (EPA, DOE, Washington State). Coordinates shipping resources and maintains shipment schedules. Provides weekly status reports to management. Reviews waste stream technical documentation to support waste packaging, transport, and disposal. Interprets DOE and DOT transportation regulations to assure that shipments of wastes are performed in accordance with all federal, state, and local regulations. Provides leadership and oversight to facility personnel involved with all aspects of packaging and transportation. Assure that packaging and shipment of all hazardous and radioactive materials are inspected and verified when offered for shipment. Provides leadership and function as Subject Matter Expert (SME) and mentor on packaging and shipment of various laboratory waste streams. Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree (BA/BS) in related field and 5 years of related experience, or equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word)

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree (BA/BS) in related field and 8 years of related experience, or equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • Experience with application of Washington State, DOE, and DOT regulations and requirements.
  • Current and past Hazardous Waste worker, Advanced Hazardous and Mixed Waste Shipper.
  • Experience with RadCalc, SWITS, and IDMS.
