About The Position

The Major Owens Health & Wellness Community Center (MOHWCC), powered by Asphalt Green, is located in Brooklyn’s vibrant Crown Heights neighborhood. Asphalt Green is seeking energetic, versatile, and experienced Group Exercise Instructors to join our team at the Major Owens Health & Wellness Community Center. We are looking for instructors who can confidently lead a variety of class formats, including, but not limited to: High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT), total body conditioning classes, Zumba or cardio dance, Yoga, and older adult fitness classes. Our diverse member base requires instructors who are experienced across multiple genres and teaching styles and who can effectively engage participants of varying ages, abilities, and fitness levels. This role is ideal for instructors who are passionate about community engagement, adaptable programming, and creating a welcoming, motivating group exercise environment.

Requirements

  • Current fitness certification from a nationally recognized organization (e.g., AFAA, ACE, NCSF, or certification specific to external licensing: i.e.: Zumba and Yoga certification).
  • Valid CPR/AED certification (required).
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with a participant-centered coaching approach.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to plan and execute well-structured classes.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience teaching group fitness classes; with a focus on Zumba, yoga, and/or older adult populations strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Lead safe, effective, and engaging group exercise classes that align with the scheduled format.
  • Arrive prepared and organized for each class, including planning class structure, music, equipment setup, and progressions to ensure high-quality sessions.
  • Modify exercises appropriately to accommodate different ages, abilities, and fitness levels.
  • Teach confidently in a group setting using dumbbells and other functional training equipment, when applicable.
  • Demonstrate all movements clearly and safely and provide consistent, positive, and constructive feedback to support proper movement and injury prevention.
  • Quickly identify movement inefficiencies and correct form using clear, concise cues (typically within 1–2 cues).
  • Foster an inclusive, supportive, and encouraging class environment.
  • Comfortably instruct while using a microphone (or be willing to do so).
  • Assist with class setup, breakdown, and equipment organization as needed.
