About The Position

Primarily responsible for maintaining the appearance, health, safety, and effectiveness of grounds, waste management, and recycling programs on NYU owned, leased, and licensed properties.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • 3 years of work experience in grounds maintenance
  • New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Pesticide Technician License Class 3(a), for Ornamentals and Turf
  • Certified Citizen Pruner from Trees New York
  • Good general knowledge of proper horticultural practices related to installation and maintenance of grounds including planting of herbaceous and woody plants, fertilization, pruning, and weed removal
  • Good general knowledge of plants indigenous to the Northeast
  • Good general knowledge of botanical nomenclature of native and commonly used exotic plant species
  • Good weed identification and removal skills
  • Good general knowledge of best practices in recycling, and NYU recycling policies in particular
  • Good general knowledge of best practices in composting food and garden waste
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to drive a truck and a snowplow
  • Ability to safely operate power tools (e.g., mowers, tillers), to carry heavy loads, to dig a proper hole, and to work on ladders and scaffolds
  • Good communication skills with ability to follow verbal and written instructions

Nice To Haves

  • A certificate or diploma from a horticultural institution and/or some college education
  • NALP Certified Landscape Technician
  • NOFA Certified in Organic Land Care
  • A good understanding of sustainable landscaping practices as they relate to soil, vegetation, and hydrology
