About The Position

Ball Horticultural Company in West Chicago, Illinois is home to a unique horticultural operation in which its display garden is fully furnished by plant and people on site. This Ground Technician position will have a key role in supporting the maintenance and set up of the gardens, which is an important marketing tool and benefit of the company. This job is perfect for someone new to the industry looking for a position that exposes them to the yearlong process of what goes into planning, growing, installing, and maintaining a 12-acre display garden.

Requirements

  • Must have a Basic working knowledge of a greenhouse facility or landscape operation.
  • Must have a High School Diploma or equivalent degree
  • Must have Basic Computer knowledge
  • Must have an active Driver’s License
  • Must enjoy getting their hands dirty and working outdoors.
  • Most importantly must have a willingness to learn
  • Must be able to work with a team as well as stay focused when performing solo tasks
  • Ability to sit/stand for extended periods of time
  • Environment ranges from cool to hot, depending on the time of year and whether tasks are being performed inside a greenhouse or out in the field
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
  • Physical ability to bend/stand/sit for various tasks required

Responsibilities

  • Keeps the property clean of garbage, scrap, and debris by making trips around the Ball campus and gardens allowing Ball team members to enjoy the environmentally conscious companies’ gardens.
  • Cleans and wipes the patios and Pavilion’s tables and chairs giving the employees a beautiful and enjoyable view of the gardens
  • Clean up the areas before events crew sets up, with 1–2-day notice. This gives the event attendees a beautiful and enjoyable use of the gardens.
  • Helps with pot filing, deadheading, and potting up plants.
  • Air blows area of debris and wipes chairs and tables.
  • Assists the Irrigation, projects, and maintenance.
  • Participates in watering schedule, which includes weekends as well as holidays.
  • Assists in winter plowing during the day, shovels sidewalks and salts.
  • Helps with detail, cleans areas our bigger equipment can’t get too.
  • Perform weekend watering and maintenance tasks during peak season.
