About The Position

The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Other divisions include Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. We have a mission that matters! Reporting to the Maintenance/Construction Supervisor II at a multi-custody female correctional facility, this position is responsible for technical guidance and supervision to grounds crew. This position’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

Requirements

  • High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma AND three years of progressive experience in grounds upkeep; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Documented working experience in the fields of grounds upkeep, landscaping, or horticulture.

Responsibilities

  • Providing construction, modification, and general upkeep of grounds areas.
  • Completing work assignments involving the standard application of horticultural practices.
  • Conferring with superiors concerning proposed work assignments and suggesting practical ways to schedule work procedures.
  • Supervising assigned crews in mowing lawns, parking lots, formal gardens, and in general grounds maintenance activities.
  • Supervising equipment operators and grounds personnel in excavating areas, removing trees, constructing sidewalks, and wrecking old buildings.
  • Supervising the repair of surfaced roads and the removal of trash, leaves, and snow.
  • Preparing requisitions for supplies, materials, and equipment.
  • Conferring with nurserymen concerning plant adaptability, accepted usage, and sources of supply.
  • Coordinating grounds upkeep work with building maintenance personnel so that equipment, labs, and materials can be more efficiently utilized.
  • Performing other related work as required and/or necessary.
