About The Position

Governor Morehead School (GMS) is the flagship school in North Carolina that serves the special needs of visually impaired students, in a unique residential setting. Apart from its flagship status as the only residential school in the state for visually impaired students, GMS is renowned for its excellent program in Orientation and Mobility as well as its Braille Music program. Supervise the activities of assigned staff while participating in the maintenance of the Governor Morehead School campuses, including solid waste removal and recycling programs. Also, subject to 24 hour emergency call. This position is an essential position, and may be required to work during periods of adverse weather, or other emergency conditions.

Requirements

  • High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and three years of progressive experience in grounds upkeep; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Provide supervision and coordination while assisting in daily work assignments for staff completing general landscape maintenance of the Governor Morehead campuses. Such as grass cutting, fertilizing, seeding, edging, tree care, plant care and turf management.
  • Supervise the inspection and assignment of equipment to be used by assigned staff.
  • Ensure safe work procedures, proper equipment operation and use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Supervise and assist in the planting of trees, plants and sod for replacement and expansion of general landscaping as well as erosion control.
  • Conduct sanitation service routs as scheduled and assigned.
  • Supervise and assist assigned staff in general maintenance of streets and parking lots, including repairs.
  • Provide inclement weather service for streets, sidewalks, steps, handicap ramps and parking lots – including snow and ice removal, deicing agent application, sand/salt distribution, etc.
  • Provide labor for layout grading and backfill of sidewalks; curb and gutter repair; pavement repair; water and sewer repair; heavy equipment operation.
  • Make daily time reports, schedule leave and evaluate employees’ work performances.
  • Assist other trade shops in construction projects, as needed.
  • Perform other maintenance related duties as designated by supervisor.
  • Develop work plans and evaluate assigned staff.
  • Review, interview and select applicants for vacant positions for assigned division.
  • Arrange and schedule staff training, including workshops, seminars and any in-house classes.
  • Counsel, coach and discipline staff as deemed necessary.
