About The Position

Be a part of a world-class academic healthcare system, UChicago Medicine as a Grounds Mechanic for the Facilities Operations Department. You will need to be based in the greater Chicagoland area. Job Summary The Grounds Mechanic is an SEIU Local 73 bargaining union position. The Grounds Mechanic maintains the Medical Center grounds equipment, tools, and supplies so as to provide a safe, clean and aesthetically pleasing environment. Reports to Real Estate Manager and takes direction from Real Estate Manager and Lead Grounds Mechanic. In the absence of Lead Grounds Mechanic, the Grounds Mechanic provides direction and instructions to Grounds Laborer(s) to ensure completion of assigned tasks. Perform and close-out grounds related PM’s within the required timeframe. Receives requests for service from Real Estate Manager, Lead Grounds Mechanic and Work Order system. Essential Job Functions Applies pre-mixed herbicides to prevent and control weeds and other unwanted vegetation. Plants bulbs and annual flowers in beds. Also required to maintain planters and plant beds. Uses power and hand tools to cut lawns and trim hedges, edge grass and weed plant beds and planting area. Cuts down wild trees. Rakes and removes trash, litter, and leaves with hand operated equipment. Removes snow from walks, driveways, egress paths and approved paths with mechanized and hand operated equipment. Performs various maintenance tasks on hand operated and mechanized equipment. Assists in repairing, commissioning and winterizing of sprinkler systems. Compensation & Benefits Overview UChicago Medicine is committed to transparency in compensation and benefits. The pay range provided reflects the anticipated wage or salary reasonably expected to be offered for the position. The pay range is based on a full-time equivalent (1.0 FTE) and is reflective of current market data, reviewed on an annual basis. Compensation offered at the time of hire will vary based on candidate qualifications and experience and organizational considerations, such as internal equity. Pay ranges for employees subject to Collective Bargaining Agreements are negotiated by the medical center and their respective union. Requirements

  • HS Diploma or GED required.
  • 3-5 years’ experience in a position performing manual labor required.
  • 2 years of commercial grounds, landscaping, and snow removal experience required.
  • Ability to provide clear direction and orientation to staff in the absence of the Lead Grounds Mechanic and the Real Estate Manager.
  • Knowledge of use and maintenance and repair of power tools, hand tools and mechanized equipment used to maintain Medical Center exterior grounds.
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs and stand and walk for up to 2 hours at a time.
  • Must be able to work weekends and callouts/overtime as directed during snow removal.
  • Must be able to be outside for up to 3 hours in all types of weather.
