About The Position

The City of Magnolia is seeking a dedicated and reliable Grounds Maintenance Worker to join our Facilities Department. This full-time, non-exempt position is responsible for the skilled and semi-skilled maintenance, landscaping, and general upkeep of City property, facilities, rights-of-way, and public spaces. The ideal candidate will help ensure that City grounds remain safe, clean, and visually appealing for residents, visitors, and employees. Work is performed under general supervision and involves the operation of various tools, vehicles, and landscaping equipment. Self-motivated and punctual, able to begin work at 7:00 AM and finish at 4:00 PM.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated experience and knowledge in groundskeeping, landscaping, and horticulture.
  • Skilled in the safe operation of a variety of maintenance and landscaping equipment.
  • Physically capable of performing outdoor labor for extended periods across various weather conditions.
  • Familiar with basic irrigation and turf maintenance principles.
  • Works well independently and collaboratively within a team setting.
  • Exhibits strong attention to detail and takes pride in maintaining City properties.
  • Effective communicator, able to follow written and oral instructions.
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • At least one (1) year of experience in grounds maintenance, landscaping, or related work preferred.
  • Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
  • Must pass a drug test and background check.

Nice To Haves

  • Pesticide applicator certification preferred, or willingness to obtain within one year of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Mow, trim, edge, and maintain grassy areas at City facilities, parks, and public spaces.
  • Plant, water, fertilize, prune, and maintain trees, shrubs, and flowerbeds.
  • Remove litter, debris, and fallen branches from City property and rights-of-way.
  • Install and maintain irrigation systems, including setting timers and performing basic repairs.
  • Apply herbicides, pesticides, and fertilizers as directed, following all safety regulations.
  • Assist with the maintenance of playgrounds, picnic areas, athletic fields, and walking trails.
  • Operate and maintain mowers, trimmers, blowers, edgers, tractors, and other landscaping equipment.
  • Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on tools and vehicles.
  • Support City events, festivals, and special projects with setup and cleanup tasks.
  • Install and maintain signage, benches, fencing, and other park amenities.
  • Handle seasonal duties such as tree planting, leaf removal, and storm cleanup.
  • Adhere to safe work practices and all City and departmental safety policies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support the Facilities Department's mission.
