About The Position

THIS IS A PROMOTIONAL OPPORTUNITY AVAILABLE TO CURRENT CITY OF SOUTH GATE EMPLOYEES This recruitment will close on Monday, December 8, 2025, at 5:00 p.m. Under direction, provides grounds maintenance and gardening tasks at City parks; performs related duties as required.

Requirements

• Any combination of education and/or experience that has provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary.
• A typical way of obtaining the knowledge and abilities would be of graduation from high school or equivalent and one (1) year of experience in grounds maintenance or skilled gardening.
• Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license and a satisfactory driving record is required.
• Knowledge of: methods, materials and equipment used in gardening and grounds maintenance work; health and safety regulations related to grounds maintenance work and toxic chemical application.
• Ability to: identify grounds maintenance and horticulture problems and needs, including the need for pesticide spray application; operate hand-operated and power tools and power equipment used in grounds maintenance; understand and follow established departmental work procedures and practices; work safely and independently; communicate effectively orally and in writing; maintain accurate work records; perform physically demanding work; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with supervisors, other employees and the public.

Responsibilities

• Plants, cultivates, trims and waters trees, shrubs, ground covers, grass, and flowers; mows, edges, weeds, rakes, fertilizes, waters, sprays, removes litter, and renovates designated areas; mixes and applies insecticides, herbicides and fungicides on lawns, shrubs and trees; diagnoses horticulture problems and recommends solutions.
• Performs a variety of maintenance and minor construction work such as installing and repairing sprinklers and assists with sprinkler system repairs.
• Assists in maintenance of athletic fields, including renovation work; cleans, maintains repairs and moves bleachers and stationary equipment.
• Operates and transports trucks, trailers, power mowers, tractors with attachments, renovators, sprayers, cultivators, hedge trimmers and other equipment related to park maintenance; inspects and cleans equipment; reports equipment repair needs.
• Completes and maintains work sheets, materials, requisitions and schedules; prepares activity, inspection, malfunction/repair needs and performance reports.
• Aids park patrons and answers questions from the general public; reports vandalism, hazards, repairs needs, damage to equipment or disorderly conduct.
• Assists with preparation of parks for special events such as moving and setting up bleachers, chairs, benches and public address systems.
