About The Position

The University of Nevada, Las Vegas invites applications for Grounds Maintenance Worker 5, Grounds Services (Tree Crew), Facilities Management [R0150422] ROLE of the POSITION This position will lead a crew of Grounds Maintenance Worker 2s that focus primarily on the maintenance of a large variety of tree species, across the UNLV Campus. The incumbent will serve as primary supervisor for the Proactive crew. Plan and schedule the work to be completed based on a systematic approach to ensure no area on campus is forgotten. Adjust schedules as needed to accommodate events, schedules, and traffic by choosing locations that don’t interfere with campus operations. Coordinate with other supervisors, trades, or departments to ensure we do not disrupt events, classes, or impede other work being done. May work with and coordinate and work with vendors assisting the grounds and FM team as needed, for a project or in times of staffing shortages.Complete all paperwork for work orders, Workday, and evaluations. Provide hands-on training to new crew members and act as the primary trainer for them. Conduct quality control inspections of completed work to ensure work is completed timely and up to ISA standards. Rotate duties for crew members to ensure equitable distribution of work load. Make sure employees are following proper procedures and wearing proper PPE, purchase PPE Supplies, and maintain an inventory of PPE. Work with Facilities Supervisor II and/or Grounds Superintendent on discipline of subordinate crew members. This includes attendance, behavior, following policy and procedure for any crew, department, university, NSHE, or State policy. Remove suckers, water sprouts and diseased, broken, dead, low hanging, crisscrossing, rubbing, inward grown, close-crotched, malformed and otherwise undesirable branches. Develop the tree’s overall shape and structure by thinning and heading back. Prune for natural shapes using natural target pruning methods and giving attention to wound closure habits. Chip branches and brush and clean up work sites. Work may be from the ground, ladder, boomlift, or climbed. Perform basic maintenance including lubricating, cleaning filters, fueling, and sharpening as specified in the Operator’s Manual. Schedule with mechanics for major repairs or PMs as needed. Purchase supplies such as replacement chains and parts to maintain chainsaws.Ensures an appropriate inventory of replacement parts are maintained. May work with outside vendors on completing repairs to equipment as needed. Provide supplemental water to all newly planted trees until they are adequately established. Prepare appropriate fertilizer formulas and recorded/updated with tree maintenance software and any/all applicable Department of Agriculture paperwork. Purchase supplies such as fertilizers to support the work of the unit. Ensure an appropriate inventory is available of chemicals and equipment necessary to complete the work. Deep root feed campus trees using powered spray units and feeder probes.

Requirements

  • Three years of experience providing grounds maintenance service including landscape, garden, or greenhouse maintenance; OR one year of experience as a Grounds Maintenance Worker IV in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.
