About The Position

The Lewis Central Community School District is seeking a reliable and motivated Grounds Maintenance Technician to join our Facilities Team. This full-time, year-round position plays an important role in helping to maintain the safety, appearance, and functionality of our buildings and grounds. Job Title: Grounds Maintenance Technician Department: Facilities Supervisor: Buildings and Ground Director Classification: Classified - Full-Time Full-Year FLSA Status: Hourly, Non-Exempt (5 hours scheduled OT weekly) Last Updated: February 13, 2026 Summary Responsible for maintaining and improving the District’s grounds, athletic fields, and exterior facilities in a condition of operating excellence so that safe, functional, and visually appealing outdoor environments are available to support full educational and extracurricular use at all times.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Holds or has the ability to obtain and maintain a State of Iowa Applicator License (or applicable chemical application certification) within three months of appointment.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of relevant grounds, turf, landscaping, or facilities maintenance experience preferred.
  • Consistent attendance is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Completion of a qualified apprenticeship program, technical training in grounds management, turf management, horticulture, landscaping, or a related field preferred.
  • An associate degree or higher in a related field is also preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Reports to work as scheduled on a regular and reliable basis.
  • Maintains all State and Local safety and code requirements and Board of Education guidelines related to grounds maintenance and chemical application.
  • Performs skilled grounds maintenance including turf management, athletic field preparation, irrigation system monitoring, landscaping, tree and shrub care, and seasonal planting.
  • Operates and maintains grounds equipment including mowers, tractors, aerators, seeders, spreaders, trimmers, skid loaders, snow removal equipment, and other related machinery.
  • Applies fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides, and other approved treatments in accordance with licensing requirements, label directions, and District safety procedures.
  • Maintains required certifications and licenses applicable to groundskeeping and chemical application and ensures compliance with all regulatory standards.
  • Develops and implements preventive maintenance schedules for athletic fields, playgrounds, exterior hardscapes, parking lots, and landscaped areas.
  • Monitors and maintains irrigation systems, drainage systems, and exterior lighting systems to ensure proper functionality.
  • Assists in preparing athletic fields and facilities for practices, games, and special events, including field lining, setup, and post-event restoration.
  • Recommends grounds-related supplies and equipment for purchase and maintains inventory of District-owned grounds equipment, tools, and materials.
  • Determines the amount of time, materials, and staffing necessary to accomplish assigned grounds projects efficiently and within budget.
  • Responds to emergency weather conditions under the direction of the Buildings and Grounds Director, including snow and ice removal, storm cleanup, debris removal, and related exterior safety measures.
  • Assists with exterior inspections to identify safety hazards and proactively addresses maintenance concerns.
  • May assist other maintenance or custodial staff as requested.
  • May be required to perform District-wide support services in case of emergency situations.
  • May be required to be on 24-hour call.
  • Other duties as assigned.
