The New York City Department of Correction (DOC) is an integral part of the City’s evolving criminal justice system, participating in reform initiatives and strategies aimed to move the City towards a smaller jail system without compromising public safety. The DOC is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for our employees, visitors, volunteers, and people in our custody. Importantly, safe jails enable DOC to provide people in custody with the tools and opportunities they need to successfully re-enter their communities. The DOC operates facilities and court commands across the five boroughs with more than 7,500 diverse professionals and knowledgeable experts. The Department currently manages a growing portfolio of active grants that require ongoing, detailed oversight to remain compliant with funder requirements and ensure successful program delivery. While internal program teams lead day-to-day activities, the absence of additional support staff creates gaps in coordination and management of the grants. As a result, the Grants Unit is seeking an intern to help provide support for the coordination and management of grants. This role would be responsible for monitoring grant timelines, deliverables, and reporting requirements; coordinating with internal stakeholders; and serving as a primary point of contact for funders. Having this Grants Unit intern would reduce the risk of missed deadlines and compliance issues which could have significant financial and reputational impact on the Department. With increasing grant activity and complex reporting requirements, the Grants Unit intern will provide essential support in research, proposal preparation, compliance monitoring, and reporting. The intern would also help to provide support services related to the grant management process, improve documentation, and ensure that programmatic and financial reporting aligns with funder expectations. This additional staffing would support successful grant outcomes, improve funder relationships, and position the Department more competitively for future funding opportunities.
