About The Position

The Grant Accountant serves as a key financial specialist within the Office of Finance, providing comprehensive fiscal management and compliance oversight for Radford University's portfolio of sponsored programs and grants. This position is responsible for the full lifecycle of grant accounting—from establishing new grant accounts in university and Commonwealth systems to preparing final close-out reports. The Grant Accountant ensures accurate financial reporting, timely billing and revenue collection, federal cash management through letter of credit systems, and strict adherence to sponsor requirements and federal regulations. This role requires strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to interpret complex grant agreements and federal guidelines. The Grant Accountant collaborates closely with the Sponsored Programs office, principal investigators, and university leadership to maintain fiscal integrity and support the university's research and grant-funded mission.

Requirements

  • Knowledge and experience in the use of data processing techniques in maintaining accounting records, ability to understand and apply established accounting principles to financial transactions and records, and ability to analyze accounting reports.
  • Strong analytical ability to reconcile financial data and prepare financial reports
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to read, understand, and interpret grant award documents/contracts
  • Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Education/training in accounting or related fields.

Nice To Haves

  • Minimum 1-5 years of experience in grant accounting, financial management, or related fields.
  • Experience with automated financial accounting systems and grants management
  • Experience with Ellucian Banner, OMEGA, G5
  • Proficiency with Microsoft suite products (Excel, Word)
  • Experience in higher education
