About The Position

The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) seeks a Grant Accountant to join the Finance department. Reporting to the Accounting Manager, your responsibilities will include shared oversight of the grants management function at AAAS which consists of interfacing with program staff, providing functional audit advice and/or training of program staff, preparing and submitting grant financial reports, preparing various schedules and reconciliations, reviewing subcontracts and agreements under grants, overseeing the grants database management, monitoring subcontracts for Uniform Guidance compliance, and reviewing proposals for funding. What You’ll Do Primary responsibilities include Grant Management activities such as the following: Accurate maintenance of grant subledgers, Process invoices, review expense reports, and maintain necessary financial records while acting as a liaison to various departments, as necessary, Perform duties related to the data entry and vetting the Grants Database, Prepare monthly payment requests related to federal programs, Ensuring that funder narrative reports are submitted in a timely manner, Preparation and submission of internal and external financial reports for grants. Assist with timely billing and collections of grant funds. Prepare schedules related to audits, including annual AAAS financial statement and Uniform Guidance (Single Audit) audits of federal awards. Assist with vendor debarred and suspended research and reporting. Make determinations concerning the accounting treatment of financial transactions and recommend solutions to complex accounting problems especially as it relates to Grants management. Perform various analyses on financial data at the direction of the Chief Financial Officer and Grant Accounting Manager. Prepare internal and external donor, temporarily restricted, or endowment financial reports and schedules. Assist with various financial and cost analysis projects or business management related projects as well as budget development and forecasting. Performs other work-related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • University or college level training leading to a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting preferred.
  • Three to five years of strong grant financial accounting experience including financial tracking/analysis, strong knowledge of accounting principles and theory, with knowledge of GAAP/GAAS, and FASB required.
  • Advanced spreadsheet skills with experience working with an advanced accounting system required.
  • Experience developing budget to actual reporting in excel and within supplementary budget and forecasting tools like Workday Adaptive.
  • Pro-active, take-charge work style needed to manage a variety of tasks simultaneously while setting priorities for multiple projects to meet multiple urgent deadlines.
  • Strong research, analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to think and act independently with a high degree of resourcefulness to solve financial problems.
  • Must be have strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills needed to communicate with internal and external stakeholders.
