About The Position

Vision To Learn is the largest school-based vision care nonprofit in the country. VTL exists to address one basic premise – if you can’t see, you can’t learn. Vision To Learn provides eye exams and glasses to students in underserved communities at no cost to the students and their families to help them succeed in school and in life. Founded in Los Angeles in 2012, Vision To Learn has since expanded to schools across the country. Vision care is critical as 80% of all learning during a child’s first 12 years is visual, we work to solve the problem of lack of access by partnering with school districts to provide eye exams and glasses at no charge to families. We have provided over 3.8 million vision screenings, 750,000 eye exams and 630,000 new, prescription glasses in the last decade. The Grant Accountant is responsible for managing the organization’s grant-related accounting operations, financial reporting, and compliance functions. This role requires hands-on experience with Sage Intacct and Salesforce, strong data accuracy skills, and the ability to work cross-functionally. The ideal candidate will have a solid accounting foundation, experience in month-end close processes, and direct experience with grant fund accounting, including compliance with donor and regulatory requirements. Candidates with public accounting experience preferred but not required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance (required)
  • Minimum of 2+ years of relevant accounting experience, preferably in nonprofit, public accounting firm, or grant accounting
  • Experience with Sage Intacct (required)
  • Experience with Salesforce (preferred)
  • Grant fund accounting experience (required)
  • Strong understanding of GAAP principles, including restricted fund accounting and revenue recognition
  • High attention to detail and strong data entry accuracy
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and post journal entries related to grant activity; maintain general ledger integrity
  • Perform monthly, quarterly, and annual reconciliations of grant-related accounts
  • Assist with month-end and year-end close processes, with a focus on grant reporting
  • Ensure accurate and timely data entry into Sage Intacct for all grant transactions
  • Utilize Salesforce data to reconcile grant revenue, restricted funds, and program-related financial activity
  • Monitor restricted funds to ensure compliance with grant agreements and funding requirements
  • Prepare and submit grant financial reports in accordance with donor and regulatory deadlines
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of grant budgets in collaboration with program teams
  • Ensure proper revenue recognition for grants in accordance with GAAP
  • Support audit preparation, including grant-specific schedules and documentation, and respond to auditor requests
  • Maintain internal controls and ensure adherence to accounting policies, procedures, and grant compliance requirements
  • Analyze grant financial data and identify discrepancies, variances, or trends
  • Prepare revenue recognition form on a monthly basis
  • Prepare exam reconciliation for review by the Controller
  • Assist with payroll and accounts payable on an on-going basis
  • Collaborate with program and development teams to ensure accurate tracking and reporting of grant-funded activities
  • Prepare bank reconciliation for the controller’s review
