About The Position

Graduate ESL Tutors serve as support to students currently and (at the recommendation of their instructors) formerly enrolled in graduate English as a Second Language courses at the conservatory. Areas of focus include writing, reading, English conversation, academic English, grammar, vocabulary, and musical terminology. The position is designed to complement the support provided through the Graduate Music History Writing Center.

Requirements

  • Current student at Berklee College of Music or Boston Conservatory at Berklee.
  • Enrolled at least half-time in a degree, diploma, or certificate-seeking undergraduate or graduate program.
  • Summer is the only semester in which a student can maintain employment without being enrolled. In this case, the student must be pre-registered for the upcoming fall semester. This exception does not apply to fall or spring semesters.
  • Have a valid United States Social Security Number (SSN).
  • Remain in “valid” Visa status as applicable.
  • A minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA. Students in their first semester can work, even though they do not have an official GPA until the completion of their first semester.
  • Federal Work Study student may apply.
  • In good disciplinary standing.
  • Must be located in the U.S.
  • Tutors must have excellent spoken and written English, and must be currently enrolled in a graduate level (MM, MFA, GPD, PSC, AD) program at the conservatory.

Responsibilities

  • Tutors will meet privately with ESL students to work on areas determined by the ESL instructor to need focus; tutoring may also address specific homework assignments.
  • Tutoring sessions are one-on-one, and meet for one hour.
  • The tutor will provide the following forms of support, based on student need (in the case of Intermediate ESL students, these needs may be specified by the teacher): Assistance with mechanics of writing Guidance in pre-writing techniques, including brainstorming, outlining, thesis development, and preliminary research Strategies and skills in self-editing Feedback on musical topics and the use of appropriate musical content Reading strategies and discussions of specific reading content assigned in student’s courses English conversation practice, in both social and academic modes Musical vocabulary and terminology
  • Students enrolled in Intermediate ESL are required to each receive one hours per week of private tutoring, of which at least half the time will be focused on writing.
  • Tutors keep a weekly timesheet, on which they will mark days/times worked, each initialed by both the tutor and student.
  • Tutors will initial and date any coursework they work on with the student.
  • In addition, the tutor will provide the supervisor with simple notes as to what is covered in each hour session.
