About The Position

The Graduate Academic Success Advisor acts as a key contributor to promoting and supporting the School of Public Affairs within the Watts College of Public Service and Community Solutions, Graduate student retention and graduation university-wide, and advises Masters and Ph.D. students in making timely progress toward degree completion through a range of in-person and virtual academic counseling and support strategies. Please note this position is in person at the Downtown Phoenix Campus.

Requirements

Bachelor's degree; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or training from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.
Knowledge of principles, practices, procedures, and methods of evidence-based academic advising strategies
Ability to direct and support undergraduate and graduate students at the University
Ability to utilize various software, advising theories, and retention-focused strategies
Ability to work under direct supervision to support students by performing specific, articulated goals and outcomes
Ability to understand general student requests for information and assistance
Demonstrates how to escalate urgent/conflicting requests
Applies collaborative approaches and strategies to devise solutions for student requests
Ability to utilize collegial interpersonal skills to maintain effective working relationships
Demonstrates proficient knowledge of essential applications to communicate with internal and external customers
Ability to utilize multiple applications or systems to elicit resolutions to student requests while maintaining an openness to new and developing tools used across the University to aid in student success and service excellence
Applies and demonstrates approaches for supporting/guiding students through curriculum requirements; identifies and creates connections to resources for students to support goals; delivers advising practices following relevant university, college/department/school ethical and legal guidelines; actively builds knowledge of key University or college/department/school resources
Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and comfortable working in an environment focused on continuous improvement and innovation

Nice To Haves

Masters degree in Counseling or higher education, preferred
Experience working with students in higher education/college-level academic advising
Evidence of effective verbal and written communication skills
Demonstrated use of problem-solving skills; critical thinking; time management skills; and having to rapidly adapt and effectively utilize new technology, practices, and policies
Experience in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with peers, faculty, students, administration, and others
Organizational experience while prioritizing multiple tasks in a fast-paced and service-focused environment; detail-oriented
Demonstrated knowledge of ASU academic structure and organization
Experience using: Student information computer systems (i.e., PeopleSoft, DARS, etc.)
Experience using: Microsoft Office Applications (i.e., Outlook, Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint); Salesforce

Responsibilities

Provides individual and group academic advising and interacts with graduate students to support academic success.
In addition, they work closely with Master’s-level and Ph.D. students, faculty, and staff to support academic success
Monitors student academic progress and program effectiveness using various technology-based tools (such as degree progress, customer relationship management, and analytics software/tools) and the application of retention-focused strategies and relevant advising/student development/engagement theories
Able to learn and use multiple systems simultaneously (such as student record databases, customer relationship management systems, degree progress tools, appointment systems, and analytics software/tools). Shares feedback and insight regarding technology systems and their daily use
Utilizes collegial interpersonal skills and an ability to communicate effectively in person, by writing, and by phone; establishes and maintains effective professional working relationships
Proactively monitors student academic performance; addresses, responds to, and works to resolve student concerns, questions, or issues; collaborates closely with students to identify all educational options including, but not limited to: degrees, tutoring, counseling, career services, success coaches, extracurricular activities, study abroad program(s), research, and internships; supports and provides counsel to students in the selection of options best suited to the student's goals, interests, and skills
Acts as a college/department/school representative to current and prospective students, faculty, staff, and external groups on issues related to academic success; attends and presents at orientation and recruiting events/activities/workshops
Works to ensure ongoing satisfaction for students with their program and degree progress and provides follow-up to ensure satisfaction with and effectiveness of services. Utilizes various university data and programmatic direction to promote student academic success. Regularly monitors assessment resources to refine and build effective practices
Works collaboratively and collegially with academic units and services throughout the University to facilitate comprehensive student support
Possesses a clear understanding of the larger picture of the college and departmental processes and expectations around utilizing these tools and how they impact the student experience
Escalates/redirects urgent or conflicting requests
Recognizes complex issues and alerts leadership; may provide suggestions in response
