About The Position

The Governor's Summer Internship Program (GSI) is designed to give college students real-world, hands-on experience in their desired field of study to enhance marketability upon graduation. Participation in the program will offer students a multitude of experiences including networking with state employees, resume building and soft skills workshops, agency head panels, and much more. This position will serve as a Traffic Intern for the La Porte Technical Services Division of the Indiana Department of Transportation. The Intern will be responsible for a variety of traffic data analysis and project planning. The objective of the position is to provide a valuable learning experience for the intern, as well as to assist the agency in completing their assignments and responsibilities.

Requirements

  • Working towards a bachelor's degree in civil engineering or a related field
  • Basic knowledge of the mission and role of INDOT
  • Ability to research, draft, and edit data and reports
  • Analytical skills
  • Confidence and ability to learn on the job and adapt quickly to changing circumstances

Nice To Haves

  • Relevant work experience preferred

Responsibilities

  • Performs complex traffic analysis utilizing traffic analysis software
  • Assists the District Traffic Engineer with various traffic study and project planning tasks
  • Conducts audits of various construction and permit projects, evaluating maintenance of traffic setups, speed limits, queues, and overall safety concerns
  • Attends field checks, pre-construction meetings, and pre-final inspection walk-throughs of construction projects, representing the traffic and safety interests
  • Reviews pavement marking documentation from contractors and provides feedback
